G'nir's head still hurt although the worst of the banging has been
diminished to a dull throb.
The klah seemed to help. No matter how wretched he felt, G'nir still had
work to do and Weyr to lead.
** Call Jodeth, ask his rider to come,** G'nir spoke to Nirreth and started
to sort through the hides on his desk. First things first. They needed
someone to replace Hygalia. That meant sending letters to other Weyrs. Not
that there were that many goldriders to go around.
}:Nirreth's rider wants to see you:{ the brown relayed dutifully. Of course
he could send the disgruntlement that was going through P'nal, who was
usually so calm and collected. The brownrider felt a sense of injustice and
the same anger that G'nir felt, though not on a personal level. She was
taking their eggs!
He'd been scraping hides all morning, which was probably to account for the
smell. Not knowing
whether or not G'nir was going to relieve him of duty with what happened or
whether or not it was an emergency, he just got up and went right away. The
brownrider arrived at the Weyrleader's office and waited to be asked
inside. His dark eyes were watching but his mouth was set in a thin line.
"If you're P'nal, get in. If you're not, go away," G'nir called when he
heard the knock.
Following the instructions, he opened the door and walked inside but he
didn't sit until he was invited to.
At least G'nir seemed more assertive and less mopey. That was a good sign.
"Sir."
"P'nal," G'nir acknowledged and gestured towards a chair.
"I see you're better today." The brownrider wasn't about to start the
conversation with anything other than something safe. He wasn't stupid. He
was also very unsure, but he didn't show it.
"No, not really. I just hide it better," G'nir replied. His eyes looked
dead.
"Look, this whole situation is stupid. It's not a reflection on you since,
for once, Dragonsfall has had a good Weyrleader. This is a reflection on
her. For reasons I will never understand she has decided to abandon her
Weyr during a Pass when we need her most and go to the north. Frankly, it's
okay to be angry and bewildered and mourn the loss. But then we have to
drag ourselves up by our bootheels and get the job done cause Thread
doesn't stop falling." That was his philosophy. P'nal was not a moper-never
had been. "So tell me what we need to do and let's get cracking and forget
she ever existed."
"You're right about that. We don't have the luxury of wallowing in our
personal feelings. They must be placed aside," G'nir admitted and this was
exactly why _P'nal_ was his wingsecond. "I _begged_ her to stay but she's
not changing her decision. So, we need a new Weyrwoman and Wingleader." He
pulled a hide with all the Southern Weyrs and their leadership listed. He
liked records and reports. "We can forget River Bluff Weyr. They have two
goldriders, Rhosyn and
Lenala... Rhosyn won't leave her position and can you imagine Lenala as
Weyrwoman?"
The brownrider thought that was about as bad as anything he could dream up.
"Maybe in about twenty turns." Frowning, he grabbed one of the lists and
started going over it. "I'd say all the other senior Weyrwomen are out,
assuming Hygalia leaving was a fluke. That leaves juniors. Meledei is too
young. Our Teseada is too young. Kapera went to Dolphin Cove
because she can't be here. That leaves Saibra who hasn't been there long or
maybe...this one at Far Island?" He pointed to the name, thinking. "For
Wingleaders though....J'ren at River Bluff could be a good choice if he
would come."
"I'll write to Dolphin Cove and Far Island. Rising Moon Weyr also has three
golds, and their junior goldriders might have gotten bored of waiting the
Weyrwoman to relinquish her rulership, which is very unlike to happen. As
for potential wingleaders," G'nir stopped to ponder and rubbed his
forehead. Shards, if his head just stopped throbbing. He poured himself
what was probably
his fifth cup of klah today. "We may not have to look for beyond our own
Weyr. What about K'ran? I've worked with him before. He's a good tactician
and gets usually well along people. He doesn't have previous experience
though," G'nir pondered.
P'nal tried to rack his memory to recall the name. It rang some bells, but
the the brownrider couldn't put a face to it. "K'ran..."
"He tends to keep to himself, short fellow and small bronze. J'nus would
also be option, but I already accepted his transfer request."
"Where is he going?" That perked up P'nal as he realized their options were
rapidly dwindling.
"Dolphin Cove. We need to keep our eyes open and evaluate our
bronzeriders," G'nir said. "I would prefer not to bring in new one from
outside. Training one takes time."
"I hate to say this but I think it's time we start throwing our younger
bronzes into leadership roles. In a Pass it's not unusual to see them as
wingseconds as the need arises since while Thread is falling the
wingleaders are usually younger." He didn't voice
the reason why, but P'nal was thinking. "That way, if something happens,
we've got someone to step in. Give them a shot and see if they manage.
Maybe some of them will surprise us. I think N'call is more than ready.
Shells, he could be a Wingleader. Or there's
J'nev for wingsecond." He shrugged, knowing sometimes there had to be
decisions made that were less than optimal.
"It's worth of consideration. However, we also must avoid rushing into
something. Haste leads to mistakes and during the Pass, mistakes led to
deaths. I would prefer an experienced wingleader," G'nir said.
"They don't get experience without putting them there," P'nal argued, the
voice of reason. "And do we have any other experienced Wingleaders left
that are not currently serving or unable to fly?" That meant options were
limited indeed.
"Yes, we might end up with inexperienced wingleader, especially if we don't
manage to attract a transfer in," G'nir said. "Shards and Shells!" He
blurted out unexpectedly. "Thread take them both to leave us in a pinch
like this!" After his outburst he just slumped. "I am just so tired with
this," his voice revealed his emotional turmoil. After few deep breaths he
pulled himself back together. "Sorry about that," he was embarrassed by his
emotional display.
"We're all a bit in the same lurch. And it's normal to be frustrated."
Better for G'nir to do it now behind doors than outside where others could
see him.
He had to show strength right now. "You said you didn't want a transfer. So
which is it, promote someone here without leading experience and see how
they do or try to get a transfer?" That was an important question and would
determine which direction they went in.
"Right now, we don't have much choice, so I'll investigate both options. I
shall write the other Weyrleaders to ask if there are bronzeriders willing
to come here and take over Cyan Wing. I will also look over our own
bronzeriders to see if someone is ready for Wingleadership," G'nir
answered. "The wider our search is, the better changes there is to find
one. What I want is secondary. What Weyr needs comes first." No matter what
happened, that priority order was clear in G'nir's mind.
P'nal nodded, thinking he had at least figured out the direction where they
needed to go. That was good. "One other thing. The other evening..I will
not tolerate the wingthird disrespecting me in front of others." His brows
knitted. Sure, others had translated only to W'ser-but that still mattered.
"If you have some issues with Rorela, work them out with her. I do not
tolerate Wingsecond questioning my decisions," G'nir said with, his eyes
narrowing. Rorela was his choice for Wingthird after all.
"I'm not questioning your decisions. I'm saying that I treat you with
respect as my wingleader and Weyrleader so I would expect the same of the
wingthird under me. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to think that applies
to her in this instance. And since she doesn't respect me enough in that
situation to behave appropriately, I think it needs to come from someone
she does seem to listen to-you. Now, if you want me to let her know it
won't be tolerated, fine I will. But I think when she ignores me we'll be
right back at this table again." P'nal always chose the more expedient
route. And if his Wingleader wasn't going to back him up on this, then
maybe he needed to make another decision.
"I'll talk to her, someday. I have rather alot in my plate so I don't
promise you any fast reaction," G'nir said. It was obviously his patience
was rather thin right now. As far as he was concerned, that was low
priority.
"That's all I ask. Do you want me to leave you to your letters? I'll go
work on the general wing duties while you handle the Weyrleader problems."
He thought it best to leave G'nir alone for now.
"Yes," G'nir answered curtly.
