G'nir

G'nir had no idea if K'ran was even interested in the position he was about
to offer him, but it was worth a try. He had called the younger bronzerider
to his office and now waited his arrival. He leafled absently thru K'ran's
file.

K'ran entered the office and snapped off a quick salute. "Good morning,
sir. You wanted to see me?"

"Yes, K'ran. Take a seat," G'nir replied and pointed a chair.

K'ran settled into the chair. "What can I do for you today?" he asked.
He felt confident that he and Rogueth had been doing well in drills
and Fall, so he hoped it wasn't a reprimand.

"That remains to be seen," G'nir said with faint smile. "How long
you're been in Dragonsfall now?"

"Half a Turn, then one and a half Turns, this time." Long enough to
know and like the place, to feel like it was becoming home.

"So you're familiar with the wing, drills, formations and the Weyr in
general," it was half question, half observation. "Have you ever
thought what might be done better?" G'nir's tone carried a challenge.
The lure been cast. He leaned backwards, his pose relaxed when in
truth he was eager to hear the answer.

K'ran took a moment and considered the question. "I think that there's
some struggle in heavy wind conditions, because the greens and blues
have some trouble. Might need some practice near mountains on a day
with the right conditions to get them used to dealing with the drafts.
Also, Cyan's got some good formations that adjust where dragons are
laterally, but practicing formations with more vertical
modifications."

G'nir nodded. He had been right, K'ran did have good ideas. "Would you like
to make those ideas reality? As you well know, Cyan is without Wingleader.
D'ale's done a good job but he's just a brown rider."

K'ran knew his answer already. He'd considered being a Wingleader before,
wanted the position, but it had never come up before. The idea that now he
might have what he was working for...

"I would be honored to take the knots from you," he said formally.

"And I'm happy to give them to," G'nir said with visible relief. It felt
like boulder had been lifted from his shoulders. "Congratulations,
Wingleader," he pulled the knots out from the desk drawer.

K'ran accepted them gravely, understanding the importance of the moment.
"Is there a specific way you'd prefer this be announced?"

"We better inform D'ale first then announce it to whole Weyr," G'nir
replied. "Oh, and you need start looking for 'Third for yourself, since
Kenza stepped down."

He nodded, thinking about how that would affect the balance of the wing.
Kenza and D'ale had held Cyan together without a Wingleader, but without
her it would suffer. "I'll do that."

"Good," G'nir said. "Let's spread the good news."
