Famell rubbed his jaw as he read the missive before him. Of all
things, this was something he didn't need, not now while he was away,
but at the same time he understood. With his Hallsecond now
relocating, that left the Hall without direct leadership until he
could return and formally designate a new Hallsecond.
Sitting down he pulled forth his parchment and drafted a letter. He
knew it was asking a lot, but he also felt it was the right decision
for now. There were not many at the Hall suited to step up at this
time. He only hoped his instinct was right.
~ Begin Letter ~
Thayde,
With the changes taking place in leadership at the Hall, I am asking
you to step up and fill a very big role. I realize you have only
recently been promoted to Master, but I feel, as do many of the
others, that you have already shown your skill and leadership in such
a short time. Will you act in my stead until I can return? The other
Masters will support you in any way they can. All you need do is ask
it of them.
--- End letter--
Thayde was waist-deep in problems of his own, quite literally as he
stood in one of watery holding cells with a very pregnant dolphin.
Normally the pods took care of their own births with no help from
their human partners unless necessary. Tonight it was necessary.
"Just a little bit more, little mama." He stroked the bottle-nose
encouragingly. Movement from his peripherals made him look up for a
moment as a flit landed on his desk, a piece of parchment clutched in
his talons as he whistled curiously at the scene before him.
"Great, a spectator." Thayde grunted.
It only took another half-hour of coaxing and petting before the calf
was finally safely delivered in the water. The little mother's
instincts kicked in and Thayde sighed as he heaved himself up out of
the water, and padded over to his desk, leaving a dripping trail
behind him on the stone floor.
"Thank you, sir." He said to the flit as he took the letter and opened
it up. Dark brown eyes scanned the content quickly, his eyebrows
darting up a bit.
**Temporary Hallsecond? Me?** Thayde flopped down in his chair, making
the wood creak in protest as he leaned back. Did he really have a
choice? Naton had a few years on him in age and had also recently been
promoted to Master, but for some reason Thayde could not imagine,
Famell had picked him instead. **And why not?** He asked himself, **I
work hard. I know this Hall inside and out.**
"Sir," he penned, "I will gladly fill-in while you are away. We
eagerly await your return. Thayde." And that was the truth, Thayde
thought as he rolled the missive back up, and handed it back to the
flit.
"Off you go then."
---
When the Flit reappeared, Famell paused in his task to greet the
little creature with a treat. Having petted him, he removed the
message and smiled when the flit disappeared to return to his owner.
Famell thought, once again, he really should get himself a flit for
such errands, but more often than not he was able to borrow one when
the need arose.
Pulling forth the note, he smiled when he read it. The young master
had accepted, as Famell had hoped. Now to see how things would go from
here. Famell penned a few other requests to keep an eye on the young
Master, and had them on their way before sending Thayde a message to
inform him that he could reach the Hallmaster at anytime through the
pods. He enclosed a copy of his schedule so he could also be reached
by other means.
Famell was eager to see how this little experiment would work. If all
went well, he had big plans for his youngest Master.
