Zathris

Runner hooves thundered against the frozen ground and she shuddered
despite the cloak and arms wrapped around her. She huddled inside
their warmth still confused and disbelieving of her rescue. For Benani
the nightmare wasn't over, not yet. Even with Zathris holding her she
was still chained to it.

Yips from Camnae strove for her attention and the canine wouldn't let
the horse get too far ahead of her before she was alongside once again.

Benani tried to console herself that Crolarin was gone but they hadn't
found him, they hadn't killed him like Zathris had wanted, though they
had tried to do. But she knew she wasn't safe yet. He would come for
her again. She knew that much and then he would punish her for getting
away. He would punish her again and again.

As if he had heard her thoughts, his hold upon her tightened. His own
were a tumble of darkness, anger, and fear. The sight of his wife in
the state the man had kept her in, he knew what had occurred and
murderous rage still broiled in his chest. The man had gotten away,
but the hunt was on and there was no way Crolarin would be allowed
anywhere near the Lady Holder again. She would be with guards every
hour of the day if need be. And he would never, ever leave her side
at a public function again.

Kardein's runner came trotting up beside Zathris, his face hard and
set. "Veyter is tracking the Harper. Outside of my son and Livie,
Veyter is one of the better trackers. He won't stop until he finds
him." The older man passed a water skin to Zathris. "With your
permission, Lord Zathris, I can ride ahead and inform your steward and
the infirmary to expect the Lady."

Zathris merely nodded. He didn't trust himself to speak, not with the
chaos that marred his thoughts at the moment. There were other guards
with them and Zathris was not unarmed and he would make short work of
anyone who dared to try and steal her away again. He glanced down at
the woman and his jaw tightened. That animal would pay. A million
times over he would pay. Zathris would see to it.

She stared at what she could see of Zathris profile. How often had she
longed to see him only to be beaten for saying his name. Now he held
her to his chest but she could see the anger in his profile and only
hoped he wouldn't beat her too. She'd tried to resist. Her eyes were
round when he looked at her. But things were happening so fast she
didn't know how to react, she knew there were rules but she couldn't
figure them out, so she just stared.

The wide eyed look on the Lady's face made Kardein pause. "Lady Benani, you
are safe. No one will hurt you." He glanced at Lord Zathris and inclined his
head. "Would you like to me to remain quiet about the news until the Lady is
seen to? A crowd might not be the best for her right now."

"Yes. We're enter through the North side." There was less traffic
there and it would be easier for the guards to maneuver people away
so they could slip through as quickly and silently as possible. "Go.
The sooner we get her home, the better."

"The boys," she grabbed at the front of Zathris shirt. "Are the boys
alright?" Crolarin had terrorized her with threats about her boys and
she needed to know they were safe.

"They're fine, love. They're fine. And now that you're find,
everything is fine. Everything will be fine." He'd make it fine.
Zathris would find that man and tear him limb from limb. She'd heal,
and everything would be fine again.
