G'nir

J'darin

Hides upon hides, neatly stacked, were criss crossing her desk. Much of
it, she could give to her 'Second, some she wanted to handle herself, and
some of it would be fine if no one ever handled it.

She sat back in her chair and considered her time at Dragonsfall and the
fact that a new gold egg had been Clutched and Impressed, and it wasn't her
Genith that had laid it.

That rankled, a bit, but for the good of the Weyr, another gold would be
more than welcome.

Genna seemed a very likely lass, too, and she knew Teseada had taken her
'in hand' so to speak.

She got along well enough with G'nir, except when he was being a wherry's
arse, and had enjoyed her time here for the most part.

Not without interesting people that had crossed her path, though!

Out of habit, she reached out to Genith and found something she had been
expecting for some time.

Pride of possession and lust rolled off her gold in waves that were strong
and almost furious in their intensity.

}:MY WEYR. I will claim it again today! Who will rule it with me?:{ The
challenge went out, loud and strong, as other golds vanished from the Weyr.

She leapt up from her desk and headed toward the feeding grounds, hoping to
beat Genith there. She knew what was coming; turns of experience could
not fail to have clued her in over the last sevenday or so.

She was glad. Glad they could reassert their dominance over this Weyr.

Their Weyr.

Genith landed on a herd beast just seconds after Hygalia appeared on the
feeding grounds, quickly followed by the entire bronze population of
Dragonsfall, and not a few enterprising browns.

**BLOOD ONLY!** She sent with mind, heart and soul. Genith was furiously
tearing into a fat herdbeast.

Men gathered, included G'nir, who surely hoped that he would still be
Weyrleader after today.

**Blood Genith! Make it long and high!! Outdo your wingmate! BLOOD!**

The gold listened reluctantly and 3 herdbeasts later, she sprang, glowing
unbelievably brilliant gold, into the crisp, clear air above Dragonsfall
Weyr.

The winner would be the Weyrleader of this place until Genith Rose again,
and she would choose the best! The very best!

G'nir entered the feeding grounds with now already familiar feeling...a
mixture of excitement, expectations and nervous fear. Nirreth was already
there, blooding his own kill and crooning his undying love to Genith. He
was going to need that extra energy blood gave him if he wanted to claim
her again.

Genith seemed to favor Nirreth, but you could never be sure. Maybe this
time she would choose someone else...that thought gave G'nir a chill. He
looked around. Who could it be, if not him? J'darin? He had been a
Weyrleader before and G'nir considered him the worst competition. U'kaiah?
He was relatively young, and while he had been wingleader for long, he also
had troubles controlling his temper. J'nev? Too young. N'call...there was
potential there but his bronze was mated with Onnyth..it was unlike to
Genith steal another gold's mate. T'mahl? Another strong candidate, former
Weyrleader. Although he had his issues too. It seemed like he and Nirreth
were the best...but you couldn't be sure until the Flight was over. He
hated the uncertainty.

Then it was time. Nirreth leaped to air after her, calling his challenge.
G'nir felt their bond strengthen, the rider and dragon becoming one. **Go!
Go! Go and catch her, old boy!** was his last conscious thought.

J'darin had been pulled away from his beautiful weyrmate yet again, but for
a gold Flight, there was no need to even think. Devyn would be proud if
they won, though in the back of his mind, he thought maybe he was not ready
to be Weyrleader of any Weyr yet. Maybe not ever again. Getting wounded
had changed some of his fundamental desires, and, to be honest, he had
loved the riders and residents of Dolphin Cove so very much. He was not
sure he could do it again.

Still, he urged Hasaarth on, who needed no urging. Whatever competition
went on between him and G'nir was even more evident in their dragons.
Never more pronounced than chasing a Gold! And not just any gold, but the
Senior Queen.

Mere moments after Genith sailed up into the air, they were one.

They were flying, gliding, soaring, twisting, all the while watching the
valiant pack of suitors. Imagine! They all deemed themselves worthy of
_her_! }:Who is worthy of me? I dare you to catch me! :{ She called out
to her chasers.

The sun glistened on her gold wings and she turned sideways, escaping the
grasp of Hasaarth. Now there was a worthy bronze! Genith considered him
as she changed course yet again. He had been a Weyrleader, and bore the
fine scars to prove it. He was in his prime, mighty and strong. He had
fathered many eggs and caught her wingmate twice.

He was worthy.

But hard after him came her familiar mate, Nirreth. She liked him best.
He had led the Wings well with little loss to her children.

Still in the mix were other familiar bronze hides, all worthy. Including
the one who fathered the gold egg.

If he caught her, would she bear a gold?

She moved toward him but found her way blocked by Hasaarth, a wily enough
gold chaser. }:Its me you want, beautiful. Its me.:{ Hasaarth sent, and
then growled off Nirreth. How he disliked the strong bronze! He should
lead, not Nirreth.

Her neck arched in response and she warned off both of them. }:I CHOOSE.
NOT YOU.:{ Hasaarth crooned his apologies and soared after her, not giving
up. He was worthy. Below, his rider had lost those vague doubts and was
fully engaged - they both wanted to win!

She found another burst of strength and soared higher still, a thermal
helping her up into an arcing, climbing rise.

}:Catch me if you can!:{

}: I can, I have caught you before!:{ Nirreth answered. He growled at
Hasaarth who got too close to his liking. He was not so presumptious as to
declare her his own. He left that kind of arrogance to his rider. The first
chasers were already dropping off, browns and younger bronzes.

On the ground, G´nir elbowed other riders out of the way, to get better
position, closer to Hygalia. "Mine," he growled. His Weyrwoman, Hygalia.
Just thinking of her made his heart beat faster.

In the air, Nirreth pulled his reserves into use, surging ahead. }: Choose
me. I am strong and we are good together!:{

Hasaarth growled back, not being willing to be chased off, and J'darin
shoved G'nir as he passed, though it was the Weyrleader who was closest to
Hygalia now.

Genith's strength began to fade. All others had dropped off but these two
bronzes. She began to fall from the sky, her path going right into
Nirreth's as he surged ahead of his strongest competition. Hasaarth, the
closest, bellowed angrily after him and was just a wingtip behind. But a
wingtip was not enough as Genith decided between the two.

On the ground, Hygalia swayed with the need to choose, to fly, joined
completely with her dragon. Just as Genith moved into Nirreth's path, so
the Weyrwoman moved to her Weyrleader, like a lodestone finding North.

}:You flew me well Nirreth. I choose you again.:{ To the last, even
though it was Nirreth that caught her as she came close enough, she made it
clear this was _her_ choice.

The bitterness and even anger that stirred in J'darin and his bronze caused
both to growl. J'darin pushed his way out of grasping females, fighting
hard the urge to give in to one of them. They had been so close! So
Close! But it was Devyn that drew him out of the press of willing flesh,
running as fast as he could ... he hoped she would be waiting this time
because he could not fight this off the way he could a green flight. He
_needed_ her.

It made no difference to the pairs in the sky and on the ground. They
were complete. They were joined.

The same promise was made below. "We choose you... " Hygalia murmured as
she was claimed on the ground, the way her dragon was claimed in the sky.

Nirreth and G'nir were confirmed, again, as Weyrleaders of Dragonsfall.
