"Hey mister," Genna smiled as she popped up at L'ger's side after class.
"You and Sondrath did some awesome work in there."
Lissath was right behind her, but for once she was silent as she mulled over
the class. She and Genna hadn't done nearly as well and she was trying to
figure out why.
"Memorizing a list of Weyrleaders for that history class is nothing when I
spent so much time trying to learn recipes and quantities, only don't tell
the Weyrlingmaster I was mentally making ingredients from his lecture!"
joked the brown weyrling.
Genna laughed cheerfully. "Now that's a good tactic!" She hadn't thought of
that herself. Not that she had an exceptional memory for recipes. She was
lucky to have Impressed, probably, so as not to become a baker. "Still
impressive though. Lissath sure was jealous, she scolded me a bit." Genna
winked cheerfully.
"You'll do better at something else I bet," he said with a smile. "Although
maybe what we need is a study group?"
"Oh that does sound like a great idea. I'm sure everyone struggles with
something and we can help each other out a lot more than we think." The more
she thought about it, the more she liked the idea. "Any ideas on who might
be up for that?
"T'lat almost certainly," L'ger paused. "I suppose we should ask Ninaine as
well."
Genna made a face. "Ninaine hates me. But if you can talk her into it, it
might be good for her."
"Maybe we could get Gelira to ask her?" suggested L'ger. He had to admit
that asking Ninaine anything didn't exactly thrill him, given how
stand-offish she'd been, even before they all became weyrlings together.
"That might work," Genna shrugged. "Better than me asking, anyway. Do you
know if there's anyone in our group she talks to anyway?"
"Not T'lat," L'ger was ticking people off on his fingers. "Or any of the
boys on green, maybe Darissa might be able to get through to her."
"Darissa is from a Hold too, isn't she?" Genna still hadn't gotten to know
all her fellow weyrlings in much detail. Theirs was such a busy life. "She
might be able to relate better to what Ninaine's going through. Did you hear
about the scene her parents made at the hatching?" Genna shuddered at the
thought of her family acting like that. Her mother might be a traitorous
hypocrite, but at least she held her decorum.
"I think so, someone said Darissa was some relation to the Headwoman at Opal
Cove, so she may just get through to little miss 'rank is everything'."
L'ger's tone was light and clearly jokey, but then his face fell as he
recalled what little he had seen of events. "I'm just glad that her parents
won't come back, nobody needs that in their lives."
"Yeah, exactly. It's crazy stuff like that still happens. It's the
shadow-side of having a gold in the clutch, I guess." Then again, if Ninaine
hadn't been there for the gold, would Luneth have died on the sands? Genna
didn't know if it worked like that, but that would have been quite awful.
"Maybe we should be glad it is all over with now, and we've got bright
futures to look forward to?"
"We have indeed," Genna smiled. It was going to be tough at times, no
doubt, but they all had their dragons now. That was all they needed.
