K'ale had jumped up with the others when the little gold chose Genna.
His applause was very enthusiastic at least until his hands began to
sting. Then he had continued to shout his congratulations with the
others.
There were so many people around her after the hatching that he passed
on by and determined he'd say something at the feast. He put on his
best gather finery and waited while a line of people came by to
congratulate her and the other weyrlings. Finally as the line began to
die down he made his move.
"Genna," he smiled. "Congratulations," he started but then there were
other people there again trying to get her attention. So he leaned a
little closer. "Would you like to dance and get away from these people
for a few minutes?"
"Oh yes, please," came Genna's desperate reply, taking his hand
quickly to be swooped onto the dancefloor. She really needed a break
from all the forced smiling and nodding, her face was beginning to
hurt!
That was all the encouragement he needed and he turned to lead her to
the floor and then sweep her into his arms for a nice waltz. "You
don't have to talk," he said softly. "Just relax. I'll steer." He had
seen more than once bronzerider do the same for a gold rider and had
himself for Teseada after they'd won her flight. Though back then they
were protecting each other from the disapproving comments on the small
clutch. It wasn't a great surprise to him when Imalkyth hadn't won her
next flight.
Now that was bliss. Genna let herself be carried through the walt,
using the opportunity to clear her head as the music took her away.
She would be alright, wouldn't she? "Thank you," she smiled gratefully
at her saviour.
"Of course," he smiled down into the pretty face. "I remember how
overwhelmed I was the day I Impressed Imalkyth and he was only brown.
I can't imagine how it must be for you." His kind heart sympathised
with her. "Do you have many friends here yet?"
"The people you met at my birthday party, mostly," Genna nodded.
"They're a great bunch." Since coming to the Weyr, Genna had found her
friendships deepend more easily, being able to choose her own friends
more easily and moving more freely throughout the Weyr. That freedom
would be taken from her for a while, she realised, so she hoped her
fellow classmates were going to be alright too.
"Yes," he smiled at his own memories of his clutchmates. "You are
going to make some great friends among your class you know." His
thoughts turned to G'wen and Cardella specifically. "We had fun along
with all the work."
"I hope so, I already know not everyone there likes me. Probably less
so now I impressed Lissath," she made a little face as she thought of
Ninaine. Impressing green wouldn't sit well with her, she predicted.
"Don't let anyone like that get to you Genna. People play mind games
sometimes. Dragon's don't. Lissath will be true and love you forever.
Just let that wash over you when other things go wrong." Of course for
her it might be difficult to tell who were her real friends and who
were just interested because of her gold. He couldn't help her with
that but Tes could. She had a good head on her shoulders. "Talk to
Teseada, she'll give you some good advice."
"I will, it's hard to believe, though, such an unconditional love!"
Her eyes shone at the thought of that wave of love washing over her
upon impression. "People tell you about it when you're a candidate,
but to actually experience it..."
"Oh, trust me, I know. I grew up with dragonrider parents and still
didn't understand until that first moment Imalkyth chose me." He swung
her around with the other couples but the music was coming to an end
and they finally stopped. He liked Genna, he'd liked her since the
first moment he'd met her. From before she'd impressed a gold dragon.
But there was no way to really make that point right now other than
just being a friend. She had a lot in front of her and knowing
Imalkyth's ambition, someday he just might catch another gold.
K'ale bowed over her hand. "Thank you for the dance My Lady," he gave
her the title she'd acquired along with her Impression.
"Thank _you_, kind Sir," Genna smiled wholeheartedly. She felt like
she could take on another round of congratulations. She gave him a
quick hug before heading off the dance floor again.
The hug was unexpected but welcome and his arms curled around her.
Then he shoved his hands in his pockets stood there watching her walk
away with a small smile.
"Well, well," drawled a familiar voice in his ear and turned to see
his father smirking at him.
"Shut up," he replied with a grin and punched him in the shoulder as
he walked away.
D'ale just chuckled and went to find Yanley.
