Description: Genna gathers her new-found friends for a birthday celebration
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 24 of Turn 7
Genna woke with a start as one of her fellow candidates jumped out of bed.
Turning around with a groan it took her a few moments to realise that it was
in fact not just any ordinary day. When she finally remembered it was her
birthingday, she shot upright with a big smile on her face. Even if it would
be another day of chores and lessons, the cake she had arranged for herself
and her friends at lunch was enough to make her grin. Maybe some would even
bring her presents.
She pushed away thoughts of her family, who she had asked not to come, as
she was 'a busy woman now' with too much to do. She shouldn't dwell on past
birthingdays and what she was now missing out on, but look forward to this
one and coming ones, ones where she might be celebrating with her very own
dragon!
As she muddled through her day, the thought of the cake and a nice lunch
with her friends flitted through her head most constantly. She had ordered
the cake from the bakers with some of the marks her father had sent her and
had sent notes to her friends and some acquaintances around the Weyr.
When the time finally came, she dragged the cake from the Bakers' to the
Dining Hall and looked around for those she had invited.
Paetri came in to the Dining Hall, a small package in her hand. She waved at
Genna and approached the table, her brows high. "Wow. You outdid yourself.
The cake is beautiful. " She handed her the small wrapped gift and gave
Genna a warm hug. "I hope you don't mind, but I asked J'kri to come. Don't
worry. You'll like him."
"No worries, there's more than enough cake for everyone," Genna smiled, her
eyes briefly glancing over the package in her friend's hand, before she
composed herself and pulled out a small plate for Paetri.
Yanley was running late. Of course Daley _had_ to fill in his nappies just
before they were bound to leave and it was big, messy, smelly one. So after
change and wash...she nearly forgot Genna's gift. She had to turn around to
fetch it.
"Not my day," she sighed when she finally reached the dinning cavern
"Oh?" Genna turned to Yanley with a smile. "Don't worry though, we haven't
even started yet!"
"Well they can start now," teased Helcoger. "I brought these," he produced a
small box containing some pastries.
"Yanley," K'ale smiled as he came up behind her. "How's my little
brother?" He smiled at Genna and lifted a little box. He'd been
practicing his glass work and made her a fancy little glass runner
that had turned out better than he'd expected.
J'kri saw the little group and spotted Paetri. He gave her a kiss on
the cheek before turning to Genna. "Happy Birthingday." He handed her
an awkwardly wrapped package. "I'm J'kri. I hope you don't mind that
Paetri invited me."
Paetri accepted the kiss warmly and lightly wrapped her arm around
J'kri's waist to give him a hug before taking the plate from Genna.
She looked around and blinked. "You have gotten to know a lot of
people."
"He's been a messy," Yanley replied to K'ale and actually gave him the
baby to hold, so she could give Genna her gift.
"Happy birthday, dear Genna."
K'ale chuckled and took Daley. He hadn't been around Dalora much when
she was this size because his father had been at River Bluff back
then. But he'd held babies so he wasn't afraid when the bundle landed
in his arms. "Hello there," he said to the face staring so seriously
up at him. "I'm K'ale your big brother."
"Oh, Helcoger, those look delicious!" Genna said, taking a peek at the
pastries. "We'll share those when we're done with the cake!"
Then she turned to J'kri warmly. "Of course not, any friend of
Paetri's is a friend of mine." She started to pass around more plates
of cake.
When Yanley and K'ale both presented a gift, here eyes grew big with
appreciation. "Thank you both, you shouldn't have." Her smile betrayed
her though and she looked at both packages, hesitating which to open
first.
D'ale, who'd come along with Yanley and his gitar, pulled it out and
began a little music to get the party rolling. "I'm open for
requests," he called.
It was all too good to be true and Genna glowed with joy. This had to
be the best birthday party she'd ever had. Not because of expensive
gifts from her father or her mother's excessive planning, but because
there were people there that had come just because they cared for her.
It was the best feeling in the world.
