Wirnan

Wirnan

Kaya sat upon the couch, her eyes fixated upon the grain of the wood
that made up the small table before it. She had drunk the wine, but
whatever had affected Karhal hadn't been in her own cup. From behind
her, she could hear the door open and she stood, then whirled about,
her eyes wide as she leaned forward, hands catching on the arm while
words immediately spill from her lips. "Did they find the Lady?" She
had asked before he'd had a chance to even close the door, but as he
did so, Kaya could tell what the answer was just from the expression
on his face and her own fell. "Oh no..."

Wirnan was exhausted. They had searched everywhere. There was no sign
of Benani. At Kaya's words, he simply shook his head no. He wanted to
sink down into a ball on the couch and sleep, but his mind was racing
at full speed.

"We've searched everywhere," he managed, his voice hoarse from all the
talking and activity without stopping to see to his own needs.

Kaya's own expression fell and she collapsed into the embrace of the
couch. "I was hoping..." But hope had been in vain. Who would have
done such a thing? The Lady Holder was far too sweet to want anyone
to do ill to her. She'd even treated Kaya with courtesy and kindess
for all that she had done. She lifted her gaze and let it settle upon
the man who had spent so much time looking for Benani. "I have a
little food and drink. I thought you might need it..."

"Thank you," he said, accepting the food and settling at the small
table to eat and drink. He hadn't realized just how hungry he actually
was until he took a bite of the food.

Kat took a seat beside him, her expression dark with her concern. "No
trace at all? No trail? Nothing?"

He shook his head as he ate. "So far nothing. No one seems to have
seen anything, no one knows where she is. There is more of the Hold to
search, which is going to happen, of course, but right now everyone is
concerned that something bad may have happened." He frowned, very
unhappy about the fact that they had no clues to guide them.

The poor lady. The woman had been kind to her when Kaya had least
deserved it. Who could do this to someone like her? "Maybe they'll
find something tomorrow." How can a woman simply disappear,
especially a Lady Holder? What had happened? "You should get some
rest."

He reached a hand out to her and gave her a reassuring squeeze. "Let's
hope so." He wanted everything to turn out for the best, but he feared
the worst.

"That sounds like a good idea," he remarked with a sad smile. "It's
going to be a busy time ahead of us for sure."
