"... and Loklan has been putting in so much overtime lately, I hardly ever see him." Parna sighed, and she and Nineba turned right into a main corridor. "Not that I mind, really. He's a good provider, and he always comes home to me. That's the important thing; fidelity."

Nineba nodded distractedly. Parna had been talking a lot about the sanctity of marriage lately and she'd given up on trying to change the topic. As much as she liked the woman, it had to be admitted that she and Parna didn't have much in common. Parna was passionate about family and family ties, while Nineba was just... passionate. She smiled slightly as she felt the diary in her apron pocket bump against her thighs. She'd taken to carrying it around as a way to remind herself of K'far's true feelings. Parna's talk and K'far's infidelity had shaken her faith in their bond. **But not for long,** she thought to herself.

"And anyway, he takes the time to- hey! Watch where you're going!" Parna turned to shake her fist at a pair of young woman hurrying down the corridor the other way. The one was adjusting her breasts in her blouse, while the other one had tucked her skirt up to expose her knees. They grinned.

"Dwakaranth is rising! And I've heard that she's got a good long string of dragons after her," said the one with the high skirt.
Nineba's heart leapt. "A girl's gotta hurry, you know." They turned and ran down the hall in a flurry of laughter and exposed skin, hoping for a lusty dragonrider to sate their lust - or maybe it was the other way around.

Parna snorted and started walking again. "Look at them. What a pair of tarts."

"Parna..."

The older woman stopped. Nineba hadn't moved, and was gazing down the corridor after the two drudges who'd bumped into them. "Nineba! Don't you even think it! You're coming with me."

"But if K'far is there..." Nineba said longingly. He'd remember what it was like if they made love again. And if she got pregnant, he'd be tied to her forever.

"No! You're coming with me." Parna grabbed Nineba's arm. "I'm not going to let you make a fool of yourself _and_ your poor husband like this!"

"Parna! Let me go!" Nineba twisted in the older woman's grip. The cuff of her shirt tore, and she was free. She met Parna's furious gaze pleadingly as she turned and ran off down the corridor. "It's my only chance! I love him, Parna. I'm sorry!"

By the time that Nineba found where the greenrider whose dragon had risen was, she was out of breath and flushed. A group of about twenty men had clustered around her, and Nineba's heart leapt when she saw K'far. She edged in closer, jostling one drudge and elbowing a kitchen worker in the ribs to be by him. **Please don't let Torth win! Please don't win, Torth!**

As if on cue, her wishes were answered. The greenrider sighed and melted into the arms of a man she didn't know, who shouted ecstatically before smothering her with a kiss. The passion that radiated out from them burned Nineba's skin as she slipped her arms around K'far from behind. His muscles were tensed and she felt herself flush in response. Her skin tingled where they touched. "I'm sorry you didn't win.
Torth is the most deserving dragon in the entire Weyr."

At that moment the brownrider wasn't thinking of what was fair or what was right. He could only think of what was needed - sex. Turning around in the woman's arms, the tiny part of him that was still unclouded balked, but the need was too hard to resist. Everything he needed was in her eyes - soft, willing... "_Mine_..." he growled as he crushed his lips against hers, his fingers wrapping around her hips and pulling her towards him, barely aware of the book digging into his thigh.

Nineba surrendered, felt her knees grow weak as K'far claimed her as his own. This was _right_. This was what she needed, what she'd been searching for, and she felt hot tears slip down her cheeks as she cried in relief.
He hadn't forgotten. He hadn't turned her away. He _loved_ her. Each touch rekindled her senses until she was awash in a sea of emotion and sensation that left her breathless. "Oh K'far- I've missed you so _much_!"

He couldn't hear her. He could only hear the blood pounding in his ears. The dance of lust that began in the skies now had to find its finish on a land-bound bed. "Take me to your room," he whispered into her ear.

She swallowed, took his hand in her own, and led him away from the frustrated crowd that had developed after the greenrider's flight was won.
She thought she saw Parna's face as she turned down the hall that led to her weyr, but didn't care. Parna was _wrong_. That K'far was with her now proved everything that she had ever believed, had ever hoped for. She felt victorious and euphoric as her hand fell on the door knob to her room and she led him inside - her, and not that awful greenrider he'd been with before. She turned to kiss him and found herself clinging helplessly to the brownrider as he kissed her back with more passion and force than she'd ever imagined possible. This was so _right_.

K'far ignored right and wrong as he pulled aside the cloth on her shoulder to explore his shoulder with his lips. He didn't care _who_ it was, as long as he could claim her flesh as his own, if only for a few moments. Lifting her into his arms he carried her to the bed, ignorant of her deep feelings, ignorant of her needs. He only knew she held the key to what _he_ needed.

Nineba sighed and pulled him closer. Cloth tore, she found her shirt rudely tossed aside even as she tugged his over his head. He grabbed her breast as she ran her hands over the exposed skin on his chest and back, and down the sensitive edges of his Threadscore. She let him hike up her skirts, her need equaling his and surrendered entirely to him.

The brownrider shuddered and moaned as he finally found his release in her arms. His breath came in gasps and groans as he laid his full spent wait on top of her, barely aware of the limbs wrapped tightly around him. He only knew that now he had satisfied his lust, he hadn't the strength to move.

She sighed and tangled her hands in his hair. His arms surrounded her, his scent, his touch inside her made her tremble. She kissed his jaw, his face, and whispered in his ear, "Everything's going to be all right again, Boo. You'll see."

One word filtered into his consciousness through his weary fog.
**Boo?** Even as her lips and breath continued to stir his flight lust, a groan escaped his lips. Rolling off of her, he realized what he had done. "Oh shards, not _you_."

"K'far?" Nineba reached out towards him and winced as he dodged her touch.
"What's wrong? Everything's all right now."

"No, Nineba," he mumbled, closing his eyes and mentally berating himself, "everything is very wrong."

"But _why_?! We're finally together again - you liked it! You love me. You _do_." She reached out to him again as her blanket slipped down around her hips. "And I love you so much!"

"It was a flight, Nineba. It meant _nothing_," he hissed in his frustration. The woman just wouldn't _get_ that!

"Yes it did. It did! You don't have to say it anymore - you _showed_ me how much you love me. How much you need me- just like I need you. Shards, K'far. How can you deny that what we shared just now wasn't special!?"

"It was _flight_lust_!" he growled as he rolled himself into an upright position. "I felt the same for you as I would for any nameless drudge."

"But I'm _not_!" She held out her hands pleadingly toward him, and her brown eyes were watery with tears. "Don't leave me, K'far."

"This is what happens when a flight is over, Nineba," K'far snorted as he pulled his shirt back over his head, feeling the frustration at unspent flight lust as acutely as his annoyance with the woman who just would not understand. "You say thanks for the good time and you go your separate ways."

"But I'll be pregnant again! That's what you want, isn't it?" Nineba edged closer to him on the bed and slipped her hands along his back. "And I won't lose it this time, I promise."

The brownrider slipped away from her warm hands and walked around the bed to retrieve his pants. "No, that's not what I want," he said as he pulled them up around his waist. "What I really want is to lose _you_."

"Don't say that. It's not true!" Nineba sniffed, then wiped at the tears in her eyes. "We'll be a family, K'far. We'll be _happy_. Just don't leave me."

"Leave you?" he asked with a snort as he refastened his trousers. "I was never here." With that the brownrider turned and walked out the door, leaving Nineba alone on her rumpled bed to sob for her lost love, and her broken heart.
