Not Quite So Friendly After All

Writers: Ames, Miriah
Date Posted: 3rd February 2014

Characters: Eirlira, Gelira
Description: The two meet up, but what starts out nice seems to end on a sour note
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 4 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Rhosyn, Y'gel

Happily moving about her business in the candidate barracks, Gelira
finished dropping off the bandages she'd been asked to deliver. They
always liked to have some on hand and she just so happened to be free
to make the delivery.

She'd just finished putting the strips into the small alcove when she
heard a sound behind her. Standing upright, she turned as she hadn't
expected to run into anyone today.

Eirlira stopped in her tracks as the saw Gelira; her face was set in a
rather displeased sulk and streaked with grime from the firestone
pits. Stuffing bags with the smelling rocks was hardly her idea of an
enjoyable time and now she smelt just as bad as the rocks did. She had
hoped that no one was in the barracks so she could sneak in, get a
change of clothes, and head to the bathing pools without being seen.
"Oh. You're here."

"Hello, Eirlira," Gelira replied. She'd tried being friendly to the
girl in the past, but truthfully Eirlira hadn't been as easy to get to
know as some of the other candidates.

"I thought everyone was gone." She frowned, then eyed Gelira with a
soft exhalation of breath. "Hello, I guess." She grimaced at the state
of her clothes and her skin, then flicked off a sliver of firestone
from her arm. "What are you doing here? Why aren't you with everyone
else?"

"Gee, you have lots of questions," Gelira replied with a slight look
of curiosity at the other candidate. She wondered if she was up to
something, but shrugged that thought away. "I was asked to deliver
some supplies as part of my duties for the day. I'm done now, so I can
just be going."

"If you want to learn something you ask." Eirlira replied promptly.
She eyed the other girl carefully and tilted her head to the side, her
eyes narrowing for a flash of a second. "You're one of the Weyrwoman's
assistants, aren't you?"

Gelira smiled and nodded. She found Eirlira a bit more pleasant this
time around than she had in the past. "Yes, I guess you could say
that. I mean, I assist her with many things when she needs me."

This girl could possibly be useful. "And how does one go about getting
that duty?"

"Well, I'm not really sure actually. I mean, I think it was because
Rhosyn knew my father so well that she asked for my help." Gelira
paused, her hand drifting down to her own slightly larger abdomen.
"But with Rhosyn pregnant now she needs much more help than she did,
and I haven't been able to do it all myself anymore."

Eirlira's eyes drifted down to the girl's hands and her brows shot up.
"Oh. You're pregnant _too_?" She shook her head. "Hasn't anyone here
heard of shaffing tea?"

Gelira snorted a laugh, "Not everyone sees a babe as a bad thing." Her
hand drifted down to her abdomen. "I'm rather excited really, but I
know Rhosyn will need extra help. She was looking for some good extra
hands just the other day."

"No, it just gives you stretch marks, makes you pudgy after the birth
and makes your hips wide. Not a bad thing at all." Eirlira snorted
haughtily. "You won't see _me_ walking around like that. I value my
figure." She paused and tapped her finger against her lips. She did
not like Rhosyn one little bit and there was little chance that the
Weyrwoman would even glance her way for that. But...there were other
goldriders. It was a thought.

Gelira frowned at the tone Eirlira had adopted as well as her words.
They were meant to be hurtful. She'd hoped the girl had changed some,
but every time they talked it seemed like all she had to say were
biting, unfriendly words.

"I think perhaps I better get back to my duties before the other
dragonhealers wonder what's keeping me," she said, ready to leave the
candidate barracks.
