Genna

Genna

"Excuse me," Genna tapped the young man that had been pointed out to her on the shoulder lightly. "Are you Helcoger, by chance?" So far she'd been welcomed into the Baker craft with open arms and she had a good feeling about this choice of craft. The Journeyman in charge had explained her a bit about the craft and where she would fit in and then he'd told her to find Helcoger to give her a little tour of the facilities.

"Yes, that's me," he said pleasantly, turning to see the young lady beside him. "Journeyman Helcoger at your service."

"Wonderful," Genna said with a smile, extending her hand. "I'm Genna, a new candidate here and interested in joining the Bakercraft. I was told you could show me around a bit?"

"I can do that," he smiled back at her, offering his hand in turn. "What, if anything have you seen here?"

"Literally just this," she gestured at the room they were standing in, "and that office," and she pointed out the room she'd had her initial interview in. "So I'm a blank slate!"

"I guess we can start with the store rooms then," Helcoger suggested. "Knowing what we have, how much and where it is stored is important."

"That sounds like a plan," Genna nodded, waiting for him to show her the way. "You're a candidate too, right?" This felt like a good opportunity for a chat and Helcoger seemed like a pleasant enough fellow.

"Yes, finally decided to stand after I got these knots. They told me they'd be a lot harder to get with a dragon by my side." Helcoger grinned, "Not that I'd object to that dragon finding me."

"Hm, I hear you," Genna nodded. "Seems like such a long shot, though, doesn't it?" She wouldn't admit it to her family, but she was to realistically inclined to believe her chances of impression to be very great. Of course it could happen, but she wouldn't truly depend on it until her dragon really did call her name.

"Tell me about it, there are people here who seem to have stood at every clutch since the gold dragons started rising more often and they're still waiting." Of course, most of those people were now almost too old to impress, and if it was going to happen, this hatching might be their last.

"But it's worth trying," Genna grinned, not wanting to get into a too depressing conversation. She still had many turns before she would be considered too old to stand. "How long have you got left, if I might ask?"

"Two turns, give or take a month," he said. "Maybe it'll be my time, maybe not. Only the dragons know."

"That's true. And if you don't impress, you'll continue in the Baker craft right?" Genna asked with a smile. "What do you like most about being a baker?"

"I enjoy the fact that I can see people enjoy what I do," he began. "I mean, if you're a healer, people go to see you when you're sick, or if you're a beastcrafter, well a runner doesn't talk back to tell you if you've groomed it right. But you get to see people eat what you've done, and they tell you straight up whether they like it or not."

"That's a good one," Genna nodded, thinking about it for a moment. "It will be a while before I get to make something entirely by myself, right?" She figured for now she would just be following instructions and preparing ingredients.

"Depends how good you are and how much experience you have. But I reckon my father would be more than happy to assess your skills and see where you stand." He'd seen a few girls who'd come to the Weyr with kitchen experience be deemed to have the skill of a senior apprentice before now.

"Your father?" she hadn't realised Helcoger had a father in the craft. "Is he a baker here too?"

"He's the Master Baker here, he taught me everything I know."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Genna said, a slight blush creeping up on her cheeks. "I didn't realise." She'd been talking to her new 'boss'' son all this time, without knowing!

"You weren't to know."

"True, I guess, but I still feel silly for asking," Genna said, shrugging it off after only a moment of thought. "But alright, where to next?"

"The cold rooms," he gestured in their direction. "Follow me."

"Lead on!" Genna smiled as she followed the other candidate.
