He had been thinking it over in the last few days and he wondered how it would seem.
In the end, though, he didn't care. When Jessmyr came at the usual time, P'nal handed the boy a box. Inside it was a woman's belt. The thing had studs and a fine buckle on it and it was clearly his handiwork, though the metal pieces had come from the smiths.
**Maybe she won't like it. Or maybe she will. What if she thinks it's because I want to...** He grimaced, going over it in his head before he released the box into the boy's hands. **What the shells else am I supposed to do with it? I can't wear it!**
"Jessmyr, can you please take this to one of my wingriders, Harki?" **Well too late now.**
"Yes, sir," Jess replied with a slight grin. Being asked to deliver things was like being Runner, except the running part. He missed that life. "Is it urgent?"
"Not urgent. You can leave it if she isn't in." He tried to act nonchalant about it.
"Right, P'nal. I just get on to it if you don't have anything else?" Jessmyr replied.
"Ah no. You can go on to midday meal if you'd like. I'll see you after though?" He did have a few things the boy could work on then if he wanted.
"Yes, sir," Jessmyr replied.
~*~ sometime later ~*~
Jessmyr knocked the greenrider's door. "Delivery to greenrider Harki!"
The door opened, revealing the greenrider in a loose robe and nothing else. Her hair was wet and she held a towel in one hand. "What?"
"Hello. P'nal sent this for you," Jessmyr replied and hold out the box. The wingsecond hadn't told him not to tell from who it was.
The greenrider blinked. P'nal? She took the box and peeked inside to find a belt. A rather fine, studded belt instead of the notes for Threadfall two days from now she'd expected. Drawing it out, she ran her fingers along its length, feeling the softness of the leather and examining the buckle. Then she looked at Jess. "I'm... wow. Um. Come inside!"
"Yes, ma'am," Jessmyr replied and took a step inside. He did gave the weyr a curious look. It was always interesting to see how other people lived. He shared quarters with drudges and other lower cavern workers who didn't have families.
The greenrider shut the door and put her back against it, the belt in her hand. It was lovely, and she didn't want to give it up. Only... "What did he say?"
"Nothing much, just to deliver it for you," Jessmyr was getting curious now.
"That's it? Nothing else?"
"Well, just that it wasn't urgent and I could leave it behind your door if you weren't home," Jessmyr replied.
That wasn't helpful at _all_. Harki had _no_ idea what P'nal had been thinking. They weren't close friends and this wasn't her birthingday. Was he trying to court her!? Silent, serious P'nal who never cracked a smile, actually courting _her_... the greenrider who'd never taken anything seriously in her life. Couldn't be. But why else would be have given her a belt? What did he want her to do?
Rorela would die laughing when she heard.
She took a deep breath. "Okay," she said slowly. "But he didn't give you a message at all? Nothing?"
"None," Jessmyr shook his head, "Sorry. He did seem slightly nervous."
**Shells!** Harki frowned. "Nervous?"
"You know, bit hesitant, I really don't know him that well, even if I'm his assistant," Jess replied with a shrug.
"How did you end up as his assistant, anyway?" Asking questions could buy her a little time to think.
"He need some help and I was available," Jess shrugged. "I don't have craft and I'm not good enough for candidate or the heavier low cavern work," he couldn't keep the bitterness out of his voice.
"Aw." The greenrider punched Jess lightly on the arm. "Don't say it like that. People Impress from the Stands all the time, and you look pretty young... you'll grow."
"I have a heart defect," Jess said with flat tone. "No dragon will want a rider who can die first time they /between/." It was easier to just tell it straight out than listen well meaning words of encouragement. He would never Impress.
"Oh." Well, now she felt like a jerk. And still didn't know what to do with the belt. "Um. Well. Uh... thanks for the delivery. I'll... talk to P'nal later?"
"Whatever," Jess shrugged.
"Guess you should go now. Um." Harki felt her ears go red with embarrassment as she sidled out of Jess' way so he could leave. Why did she always have to go and say the wrong thing? And she was wearing a _robe_, for Faranth's sake! A robe and nothing else. This was so awkward!
"Yes, ma'am, I still have more work to do," Jess replied and touched his forehead respectably before walking out. He shook his head for the dragonriders..if they liked each other, why didn't they just _say_ it?
