Description: The two of them discuss the weyrlings' training.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 12 of Turn 7
The greenrider was sitting in his office scribbling on some hides. He had checked
the training plan for the newest weyrling class and found himself smiling.
These were the easy months, before things got hard. Mainly, they just had to
focus on the physical conditions of the weyrlings themselves to prepare them
for later things.
"D'lorn," U'das knocked before stepping inside the greenrider's office.
"Hey U'das, come on in and have a seat." They had some things to discuss. It was
odd having the old Weyrleader on the weyrlingstaff sometimes since D'lorn had the
tendency to defer to him, then he remembered he'd been a weyrlingmaster longer.
"Klah"
"Yes, please," U'das replied with a nod. He took the seat.
Making short work of producing a mug along with a pot and sweetener if the man should want it, D'lorn
then pulled out his list. "So....as far as the current class goes, they're heading
into the point where the focus is strengthening the bond and preparing them physically
for the training and work later on."
"Yes, that's when the things start to get interesting," U'das replied. "Not to mention
the _real_ work begins."
"Indeed. Now I was wondering. As far as the actual lessons are concerned,
where is your comfort level?" He wondered if U'das had a preference.
"I'm comfortable with anything that doesn't require sharp vision or accuracy.
And I bet I can still outrun most of those kids," he grinned. Stepping down from
Wingleader didn't mean giving up his self discipline. He liked to keep himself
fit...it helped keeping up with young greenriders.
"So you would have no problem dealing with exercises or obstacle courses or even
ground drills to assist coordination. That's good. Actually I think that would be
a good idea. If you want to take over their physical training regimen, you can.
As a former Wingleader you would know what they need to be able to do to be an
effective fighting pair." D'lorn was comfortable in admitting that.
U'das nodded. "I'll make them run up stairs that go up the bluff side. That's a
sharding good exercise, and one that my wing members _loved_" the last part was
said with sarcastic tone.
"Being properly tired will also give their minds less time to
wander. That can be dangerous when you have a young dragonet probing your
thoughts." D'lorn remembered those days. With his green, anything had been fair
game.
U'das nodded again. "Swimming is also good exercise and kind of
required skill in a Weyr like this. Do you know if there's any weyrlings who
don't know how to swim?"
"I don't but we usually focus on swimming later on when it's time to build
the dragonets' wings up. At this stage, they'll try and go into the water with
their riders and will flail and that'll cause troubles so we usually wait till
both of them can go in." The little ones could wade into the shallow weyrling
pool to be bathed but that was different.
U'das nodded. "It still might be good to find out now who needs swimming
lessons," he suggested.
"You're more than welcome to have a get to know you session with each weyrling
if you like. That could be one of your questions?" D'lorn knew they had all been
introduced to U'das when he joined the staff, but he needed to get to know each pair.
"All right," U'das agreed.
"Otherwise, I think everything else is just as usual. You'll pick it up." D'lorn
wondered how long he'd be able to help before his sight finally gave
out. The greenrider didn't voice that thought though.
"Yes, no problems," U'das answered. He was wondering almost
same thing, how long he could continue until he was forced to full retirement.
