Reven rubbed a hand to the back of his neck and twisted his head back
and forth. He couldn't believe the turn of events since his arrival
with Arippa at the hold. Rumors were flowing from everywhere that he
was in some sordid affair with Relea. He liked the young woman, and he
thought she would be an excellent companion for his brother Coran, but
he no interest in her sexually.
Arippa wasn't taking the rumors lightly, however, and the strain it
was putting on their new marriage was difficult. The throbbing
headaches he'd been having didn't help either. Pushing up from his
desk, Reven checked the infirmary first before trying Coran's
quarters.
"Oh little brotherrrr." Reven called as he walked in. Frowning he went
into the man's bedroom and froze when he saw a feminine form in the
bed.
"Oh, excuse me." made to avert his eyes before he realized that the
form was clothed. Lifting his eyes he was shocked to find Relea.
The day had worn on and Relea had slept most of it away. She was just
too exhausted and miserable to do anything else. Well, that was
except wake up from time to time to heave nothing into a bucket.
Eventually, though, that settled down and she slept for a good four
hours. When she finally awoke, she still didn't try to get up.
Rather, she remained prone and hugged her bucket just in case her body
decided to go into another round.
So even though she didn't hear him come in, she saw him. Relea lifted
her head just slightly to peer around the side of the bucket at the
visitor. She had thought it might be Coran, but she was wrong. When
she saw the holder, she slowly and carefully eased herself up. Her
stomach complained, but she didn't try to throw up. Yet.
Reven's arrival was met with a small smile and her sign for 'hello'.
That was about all she was going to be able to muster right away.
The holder was not as good with the sign language as Coran, but he had
learned some basics from Relea, "Are you okay?" He asked.
Relea shook her head. She patted her stomach, then made a motion that
could only be taken one way. Nothing had stayed down. And yet,
despite that, she signed, "Are you okay?"
He figured he knew what she was talking about and so he lifted his
shoulders, "I am okay." He responded, and then glanced around the room
once again, as if his brother might appear out of thin air, "Where is
Coran?"
Relea wished she had her little board with her. Unfortunately, she
hadn't had the presence of mind to grab it when she'd been stumbling
from her room and into the hallway. So, she did the best she could,
she shrugged, then shook her head. Her hand waved toward the chair
nearby, an invitation to sit and wait.
Reven wasn't sure what he should do, and right as he put a hand on the
chair to sit down, he heard the door creak behind him. He turned, and
smiled when he saw Coran entering the room, "There you are."
Coran's face was passive, yet his tone was frosty, "What are you doing
here?" He had thought a lot about the rumors going around while he had
been running a few errands and checking on some of his other patients.
Finding his brother alone with Relea didn't help matters.
Surprised by the tone of Coran's voice, Reven held up his hands, "I
was looking for you. What is Relea doing here?"
"She came to me sick, throwing up, can't keep anything down. It was
still early morning, so I stuck her in my bed so I could come back and
forth and check on her. What did you need me for?" Coran asked,
feeling a little less tense about Reven's presence.
"I have been having killer headaches, all the way down my neck, I was
just hoping you could help out. I didn't know Relea would be here. I
can go see one of the other healers." Reven turned and looked back at
Relea and signed, "I hope you feel better soon." Walking to the door,
the holder turned and speared his brother with his gaze, "And I would
like to speak with you when you have time, Coran. I think there are
some things we need to discuss."
Coran nodded in acknowledgment to his brother's order, and then turned
back to Relea, the tense lines of his face easing, "How are you
feeling?" He asked with concern.
Relea couldn't hear, but that didn't mean she was blind. The atmosphere
in the room went extremely tense as soon as Coran had entered. She didn't
need to hear the tone of their voices to see that something was wrong and
the exchange betwen them terse.
When Reven left and Coran turned to her, she managed a small smile and
signed, "A little better." She wanted to ask what the exchange was about
beyond headaches._Something_ was going on, but she didn't know what, and
she was a little hesitate to stick her nose in it when it probably didn't
belong there. She did, however, ask him the same thing she had Reven,
"Are you okay?"
The man's smile was tight, but he did relax a little, "I am fine, I
promise. Have you managed to keep anything down?" Coran asked,
effectively changing the subject. He had never talked to Relea,
personally, about the rumors that were swirling about her and his
brother, and he was afraid that if he did it would offend her.
"I haven't tried yet." Relea signed slowly. Part of it was because Coran
was still learning, but mostly she was just down right exhausted, even
though she had slept most of the day. Despite her fatigue, she couldn't
help but ask, "What's wrong?"
Coran studied the woman's face for a long moment before he reluctantly
signed, "Do you know the rumors around the hold about you and Reven?"
Relea frowned and then shook her head. "What rumours?" She asked,
her hands almost hesitant. Did she want to know?
The man groaned, wishing he had mentioned anything about it, "People
are saying that Reven is having an affair with you. I don't know how
it got started, or by whom, but it has spread around quite a bit."
Relea's mouth dropped open when Coran explained and then she shook her
head. Unfortunately, this just made her dizzy. She wobbled in the
bed a moment then signed, "No."
The woman's denial made Coran feel relieved, and then ashamed that he
had doubted her anyway, "I am afraid so. People don't understand that
when you two meet to discuss sign language, or the hats you are
creating for mother, that nothing else is going on.
Weariness seemed to weigh more heavily on the girl. "What should I
do?" Was there anything she could do? People could be so cruel.
Coran shook his head, "Don't worry about it. As long as there is
nothing new to flame the fire then it will die down and it will be old
news before you know it."
"I hope so." Relea signed slowly. She closed her eyes momentarily,
then signed again. "I'm tired. I should let you have your room
back."
"Are you sure? I can sleep in the infirmary." He offered.
"There are enough rumours." Relea could only imagine what sort of
rumours were going to start now that'd she'd been so foolish as to go
to Coran's room rather than the infirmary. Probably that she was
sleeping with both brothers! "I should go to my room, but thank you
for helping me."
Coran offered her a supportive smile, "I will check on you in the morning."
