Wing Formations

Writers: Chelle, Yvonne
Date Posted: 30th July 2013

Characters: P'nal, Harki
Description: P'nal helps Harki get caught up on Wing formations... sort of.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 27 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: G'nir, Teseada, T'mahl

He looked forward to meetings when they were with the wingriders he liked. And
P'nal knew Harki. She was one of those greenriders that had spunk. She didn't
always do what you thought, but she could be depended upon to fill the gaps.

"P'nal!" The door banged open and Harki walked in without knocking. She
was grinning as she slumped into a chair and leaned back, crossing her legs as
she looked him up and down. "Shells, who'd you have to sleep with to get
those knots?"

"The Weyrleader, funny enough," he quipped without missing a beat
then he broke into a smile. "So madam, why did it take you so long to come
back?"

"Klah's better at Rising Moons." Harki shrugged. "I don't know. I
honestly thought that I could make it home. Foolish, I know." She flashed
a quick smile, more to convince herself than P'nal. "I guess it took going
away to prove that I really belong here."

"Well I'm glad you're back and flying with me, that's for sure. We could
use you." He found his thoughts drifting to the small clutch hatched by
Teseada's gold recently. "What formations were you all using when you
left?"

"Standard formations for calm and snow. T'mahl had just changed the one
for high winds before I left. As Weyrleaders like to do." She rolled her
eyes. "The new one had four levels instead of three, and arced the edges
into a 'u'. I never got to fly it in Thread to see if it was actually effective
or not. Do you still use it?"

"From time to time." He pulled out the formation charts. "These four are the
ones that G'nir favors. You'll recognize those two for sure but these others
I'm not sure of. Since we've gotten deeper into the Pass, it's been necessary
to be more protective of our numbers as we've learned more about
Threadfighting." The brownrider was all for that. Adapt or die.

Harki glanced at the hides, then turned her attention back to P'nal. "What's
G'nir like as a Wingleader, anyway? Or a Weyrleader, for that matter."

"Well it depends. If you get on his bad side, you're cracked-the end. However,
I have noticed that as long as you make sense he will listen to you. Like most
bronzeriders, though, he's ambitious and he does have an attitude sometimes. I
think me being a brownrider is why he tolerates me for the most part."
**He doesn't feel threatened.**

"That stuffed-up, that he surrounds himself with browns just so he's got
an easier time leading? I mean-- that came out wrong--" She put her
fingers to her lips to hide a smile. "I'm sure you're as hard-headed and
argumentative as any bronze boy out there."

"Probably not true. I seem to be the sensible one, which might also be why
G'nir and I work well together. I'm the voice of reason." P'nal found
himself smiling softly.

"The voice of modesty, too, aren't you. Very reasonable of you,"
Harki said.

"Modesty, explain?" P'nal enjoyed the mental sparring with her sometimes,
though he knew he would have to make sure Harki knew not to speak like that
with the new Weyrleader.

"I'm sure that there's nothing a greenrider like me could _possibly_ explain
to a Wingsecond like you," she replied.

"Oh shut up," he said easily. "Now you're being modest. Listen,
though, I know things with me are a certain way but...I wouldn't
necessarily be so sarcastic with the Weyrleader. He's a very literal man."
Hoping that was enough of a heads-up, P'nal tried to think of whatever
else he needed to tell her.

"He is. Literally," Harki said without guile, her eyes wide and innocent.
"And a handsome one at that!"

"I'm no judge of that, I'll leave it to you. All right Harki I think we
covered everything. You have your drills and meeting schedule right?"
P'nal thought he had already given it to her but he liked to double check.

The greenrider nodded, knowing a dismissal when she heard one. "And I got
a copy from G'nir. I'll see you at drills this afternoon, then."

"Definitely. And if you have questions, just give a shout." P'nal was glad to
have someone that he could throw in and out of formations, not having to worry
that they would flinch while flying point.
