Chew Baby Chew

Writers: Chelle, Paula
Date Posted: 12th August 2013

Characters: B'jon, D'lorn
Description: B'jon's first moments as dragonrider don't go as smoothly as expected.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 25 of Turn 7

B'jon, previously known as Bedjon, was even more convinced the Weyr was
place where dreams came true, when the green hatchling crawled over the
Sands to him.

}: I'm Denenth, :{ the melodic voice in his head said.

"Oh, Denenth, you're so beautiful!" B'jon cried and crouched to hug her.
She was dark, pine green at the back and the underside was more lighter
shade of green.

}: I'm also very hungry :{, her eyes swirled fast.

"Come on then, the food's that way," radiantly smiling B'jon started to
guide her towards the entrance.

Few minutes later, someone handed B'jon a bucket filled with meat. Denenth
opened her maw and B'jon tossed a meat piece to her. She seemed to inhale
it and then...
She made gurgling sound and tried to cough. B'jon could feel her distress,
like _he_ had clump in his throat. While the green struggled to catch air
and to get the meat stuck in her throat out, B'jon looked around and cried:
"Help! She's choking!"

Hearing the noise, the greenrider headed over, seeing the little dragonet.
She was all right but it seemed her rider's distress wasn't helping
matters. "Calm down and tell her to stop thrashing so we can help her."

}:Little one, mine and yours can help you but you will need to stay still:{
Villith offered from her place on the gallery with a few other dragons that
had been humming.

B'jon took two deep breaths. ** You've dealt with sick beasts, you're good
with them,** he reminded himself and focused his mind, forcing himself
calm. "Stay still and calm, they will help you," he told Denenth.

"Okay B'jon, I want you to put your hand down her maw while it's open.
You'll feel the meat. Try to tear it and pull some of it up so she can chew
and swallow the rest." There was a possibility she could accidentally snap
D'lorn's hand but he knew she wouldn't bite her own rider. The weyrling had
been a farm boy, so the greenrider was hoping he didn't have any qualms
about doing what he was told. The greenrider moved behind the dragonet,
placing soothing hands along her sides to keep her still. "Shh Denenth,
we'll get it okay?"

"Like with stuck calf?" B'jon asked, mostly from himself. "Okay, Denenth,
open wide and I pull it out. No biting," he instructed his green. She
obeyed and opened her jaws. B'jon put his hand in, and tried to his best
ignore the sharp teeth. Herdbeasts didn't have teeth like that. He got the
meat between his thumb and index finger and pulled it out with jubilant
whoop. Removal of the stuck meat woke up Denenth's vomiting reflex.
Unfortunately, she didn't have anything to throw up yet. After some dry
heaves and coughing, she gave out a miserable whimper. "Oh, poor baby,"
B'jon hugged and scratched her.

"Good job. Listen you two, go ahead and rest for a little bit. Denenth,
drink some water to soothe your gullet. Then try again with much smaller
pieces. B'jon remind her to chew." D'lorn stood back, trying to let the new
greenrider handle it. Best to let them show some responsibility sooner
rather than later.

"All right," B'jon nodded. "Here, drink this, Denenth," he fetched a bowl
of water and gave it to his green. Denenth drank thirstily and then started
to complain of her hunger again. Grinning, B'jon cut every meat piece to
half before giving it to her. She chewed thoroughly at first, and swallowed
almost reluctantly. This was lesson she wasn't likely to forget easily.
B'jon was starting to worry she would develope a fear for eating. But after
couple more pieces she started to eat as eagerly as the other Hatchlings
around her, and he was reminding her to chew before swallowing.
