Y'gel

Y'gel
Arippa or Faldrimme

Faldrimme

She'd been working on her own craft now for a whole sevenday. It was a
rewarding and exhausting experience. She'd been given some time off
and told to explore the Weyr further. With Planar trailing her as
usual, Faldrimme knew one place she hadn't been able to visit that she
wanted. It was _similar_ to beastcrafting, but far different. She'd
sent a message to the dragonhealers and asked if she could come and
observe. When she got an affirmative answer, she eagerly made her way
to their rooms to see exactly what they did.

Y'gel was up on a step stool checking the dressing on a seared brown
flank when one of his assistant's announced the Lady.

"I'll be down in a moment," he called over his shoulder.

Faldrimme simply stood where she was, watching the man on the stool
working so closely to the large dragon. What he was doing was very
similar to what she hoped to accomplish in her own craft. Tending the
animals. Yet, she knew dragons were far from animals. They were more
like people and needed to be treated as such. For an instant she
almost wished she could pursue the craft she was watching before her
very eyes. It seemed to combine the best of everything into one, but
still, she knew it wasn't quite right for her. She had no desire
whatsoever to become a dragonrider.

When he was finished, Y'gel grabbed a towel and descended the ladder
then turned and wiped the redwort off his hands. "How can I help you
Lady Faldrimme," he smiled.

Not many people had been calling her by her title. She'd done her best
to keep it from happening actually so she could fit in better.

"Please don't call my Lady, here," she said quietly looking around at
who might have heard, "I'm trying not to stick out too badly with the
others." She knew it was probably a foolish request and many people
knew exactly who she was, but most of them hadn't addressed her so
formally since she arrived.

"Fair enough," he smiled then dipped his head toward his knots. "No
need to call me Lord then either. I'm Y'gel by the way, bronze
Aughashyth's rider." He held out his clean but stained hand.

"Nice to meet you," Faldrimme replied, taking his hand. She'd already
worked in the muck in the animal pens, so the stains on his hands
didn't bother her in the slightest.

"I was hoping I could learn more about dragonhealing. I'm here to see
if I can become an apprentice beastcrafter, but the Weyrwoman had
mentioned that I might also be interested in learning more about the
craft of dragonhealing as they are related." She wasn't sure what he
would say, but she hoped he would allow it.

"Certainly," he smiled. "I'd be happy if you were to join some of the
apprentice or weyrling classes. Would that work for what you'd like to
learn?" He tossed his towel on the bench and started toward his
office. "If you come with me we can take a look at what we have coming
up the next week and you can get an idea of what's available."

"That would be great, thank you," Faldrimme replied, following him.
Once in his office she asked the question that she'd been thinking of.
"What's the difference between apprentice classes and weyrling classes?"

He smiled at the intelligent question. "Well the weyrling classes
teach the riders how to detect when something is wrong with their
lifemate. Dragons try to hide it when they're not feeling well. But
apprentice classes teach what is actually wrong and how to treat it."

"I see. That's a very important distinction. I would very much like to
sit in on both then, if I could." She knew it was perhaps asking a lot,
but she wanted to make the most of her month so she could make the
best decision possible when that time was up.

"Very well then," he smiled in a fatherly way. "Why don't you come
back after lunch. The weyrlings will be here and you can observe and
listen. In the meantime I'll make up a schedule for you so you can
also attend some of the apprentice classes."

"Thank you. That would be wonderful." Faldrimme was pleased that she
would get to participate. She had to go back and talk to the
journeyman in charge today to let him know that she would need some
time away from her work. She hoped it wouldn't cause any problems.

"The least we can do," he dismissed her thanks with a wave of his
hand. "I'll see you after lunch."
