Lady Yanley

D'ale

Yanley walked around the gather area, greeting familiar faces, her
gaze searching for one particular face. Via her flits she knew his
dragon had arrived, among many others from the Weyr.
Yanley's pregnancy had progressed past the first trimester and was
showing. She still made an effort to hide it with loose clothing.

He and Tonuth and come with the rest of the contingent of riders from
Dragonsfall. He knew, of course, that the truth of his relationship
with Lady Yanley would soon become common knowledge and he would have
been proud to proclaim it to the entire Hold. But it was her decision
and her life that would be most affected so he'd do it the way she
wanted.

He couldn't help himself though when he finally saw her across the
square looking exactly as lovely as his memory. He knew of course what
was hidden under the soft swell of her skirts. He, who knew her body
so well, could see the thickening of her normally trim waist.

He could see her looking around for someone so he just folded his arms
and leaned against the side of a building and waited for her to spot
him.

Someone pushed Yanley from behind and she head whispered words
"dragonrider's slut," but when she turned to look, no one was watching
her direction and she couldn't see who it had been.

But D'ale had seen the culprit from where he stood and though he
couldn't hear what had been said he could see her turn pale and look
around. He headed across square and as he strode purposefully to her
side he slammed a shoulder into the offender "Oh, excuse me," he said
in a tight voice as he steadied the man. "I didn't see you there."

"D'ale!" Yanley hesitated to hug him in a such a public place. "What
was that about?"

"Nothing," he smiled and bent to kiss her hand. "Lady Yanley." He
stayed at a respectful distance. "You're looking lovely."

"And you're looking handsome," Yanley replied with a smile. She did
wrap her arm around him.

"Are things well with you," he asked in obvious concern for her welfare.

"I'm feeling fine, all things considering," Yanley replied.

He knew he was fighting a losing battle with the way her mind was set
but he couldn't help the well of anger surging in him for the way she
was being or going to be treated here. "Please Yanley," he said
softly. "Come back with me? I can protect you there."

"What? And miss all the excitement here," Yanley asked with a humour.

He certainly admired her pluck but he had to chuckle at the way she
was handling the obvious difficulties. "I'm not going to stop asking,"
he said softly. "That's my sweetheart and baby they're kicking around
and I'm sorely tempted to go against all Weyr policy and start a
fight."

"I don't want you to risk your career for me," Yanley said with some concern.

"Then let me take you someplace where that won't happen," he pleaded.
"They'll appreciate you _and_ your skills at the Weyr Yanley. They
won't push you around and I won't have to try and hurt anyone." He
grinned the last part. "It's the perfect solution!"

"Maybe," she was still hesitant.

And that was the closest she'd come to accepting his proposal yet. So
he squeezed her hand where it lay on his arm. "Now then, what would you
like to eat?"

"The barbecue ribs smelled heavenly," Yanley said and gave an
apologetic smile, "I've been eating strange things lately."

"I wonder why that could possibly be," he said with an innocent grin
as he escorted her toward the barbeque.

"What indeed," she laughed, happy to just be with him.
