Genna

Genna

Genna had eaten her breakfast quietly, all the while being
exceptionally helpful and pleasant with her parents and siblings. It
raised her mother's suspicions, but as there wasn't much to go on and
Sinla had other things on her mind, she let it go for once. After
breakfast, Genna made her way out of the family's quarters as quickly
as possible and down the corridors in search for the Headwoman. She
hadn't forgotten about her promise to the guard captain and had no
doubts he would indeed put her in the cells if she didn't do as she
had promised.

Zelanka was just getting into her office, after doing her morning
round in the hold.
"Genna, how can I help you?" she asked when she noticed the girl.

"I have something to confess to, Ma'am," Genna said, her head bowed in
shame and a slight blush on her cheeks, the speaking image of an
ashamed youngster. "May I come in?" There was no use risking a scene
out in the hallway, after all.

"Of course, dearie, do come in," Zelanka replied and got the door
open, shooing her inside. She closed the door after them. "Do you want
a cup of tea?" she asked while they settled down and found seats.

"No, but thank you very much, Ma'am," Genna said, looking down at her
hands as she sat down. "I.. uhm.. I need to tell you something I did
last night and I think I'd better just come out and say it. I tried
breaking in to the kitchens for a late-night snack."

"Breaking in to the kitchen?" Zelanka repeated. She had hard time to keep her face serious and not to laugh out.

"And you decided to confess it all by yourself?" she asked with arched eyebrows when she was sure her straight face would keep. She knew young girls.

"Too be honest, Ma'am," Genna started with a mournful face. She knew Karhal would check up with Zelanka, so she would find out the truth anyway. "I got caught. Guard Captain Karhal found me at the door."

"While you were picking the lock," she said, "Oh dear." She covered her face with hands. It was either that or laugh.

"Did you know that there's food and klah available in the dining hall through whole night for those who have to work in night shifts?" Zelanka asked.

Genna blinked for a moment, thinking this over. "I thought that was only meant for those actually working the night shifts, Ma'am," she replied hesitantly. Had she really been that stupid?

"There's no restrictions, anybody can take from there. If it runs out, you're supposed to tall that to the night cook. It didn't occur to you to ask before you started breaking in?" Zelanka replied.

"Uhm," Genna blushed heavily at her own foolishness. "No, Ma'am, it didn't. I guess I just assumed I knew and.." she trailed off helplessly.

"Oh, Genna. I though Sinla has trained you better," Zelanka sighed with disappointment. "Well, I can't let you get away from this without punishment. You'll be helping the kitchen staff for next two Sevendays," sha gave her a stern look.

The TurnOver Gather was approaching, so extra pair of hands in the kitchen would be a great help to her staff, and she would learn to value the work they were doing. Hopefully.

Genna bowed her head, considering her punishment. She really didn't look forward to all the extra work, but on the other hand it could have been much worse. "Yes Ma'am," she replied quietly.
