Hygalia paced from one end of the meeting room to the other, biting the
nail of her thumb between her teeth thoughtfully as she waiting for the
Weyrleader to arrive. He had to have heard by now. What a disaster.
Exactly not what they needed right now.
G'nir stepped in. "I'm sorry to kept you waiting, Hygalia. I was delayd by holder who wanted a chat," always a gentleman, he apologized first. After the Hatching they only had a moment before the feast started.
"What did he say?" she asked, having dropped her thumb from her mouth guiltily the moment she heard the door open. Her aunt had always reinforced the fact that one could indulge in bad habits only as long as they remained private. But she clenched her toes as she waited for his answer, nervous at what people thought of their rather pitiful showing.
"He was congratulating and offering his condolences at the same time. Such a small clutch and no bronze for his son," G'nir grit his teeth. "I wish his boy had Impressed green," he continued.
Hygalia frowned. That point could not go unnoticed. "We could have used more bronzes. But it can't be helped. I still don't know what that silly gold was thinking."
"Probably she wasn't _thinking_ at all. Thinking seems to be beyond abilities of young women and young Golds," G'nir said.
Golds tended to have a bit more sense, or at least Hygalia had expected them to. Of course, these things were not unheard of. "I just don't know what to say to those people..." What the Weyrwoman would never admit was that it could have been her when she was a young gold. Thank the Egg, it had not, but then again, it wouldn't have truly mattered when they were a young pair.
}:I would _never_ have chosen a brown,:{ Genith interrupted indignantly.
"Why say anything? It's a dragon's choice," G'nir said dryly. "We really can't _do_ anything about it. Just hope Onnyth chooses better next time."
"If she doesn't you can be sure she won't ever be a Weyrwoman," Hygalia said with a serious frown. Jyramikah's gold seemed to have a propensity for browns. How many times had she been passed over for Weyrwoman? A Weyr looking for a senior gold to vie for the position, or just to bulk up their numbers, would certainly think twice before accepting such a gold pair into their Weyr.
"So true," G'nir said. "No Weyr want a gold who mates with browns to lead them. Brown's have lot of good qualities, but they are not natural leaders."
"Well, some of them are. I would certainly say D'ale has proved himself, has he not?" She certainly didn't want to give him the impression that she was against browns as qualified leaders. But young browns definitely should not be siring Clutches in a Pass!
"I think in his case, it's the rider's character rubbing off to his dragons, "G'nir replied. "K'ale, however, has still to prove himself."
"It was _not_ K'ale's fault. Nor is it Teseada's. We cannot put the blame on them. They were too young to know what could happen." They would know better next time. Of that, Hygalia was sure.
"You're right, in the end it was the dragon's choise, it always is no matter how much we try to influence the Flight's outcome," G'nir agreed. "Now, how can we get the holders realize that?"
"I think there is no way we can put it in a light that makes them see it for anything but what it is - an unfortunately small Clutch. But, we will assure them that Onnyth is young, and will produce larger Clutches in the future. And we'll say it with a smile." Aunt Colara had always emphasized that point to her, and it was one she had taken to heart.
G'nir nodded and sighed. Not a thing they could do about the situation, except grind and bear it. "So, shall we put on our best smiles and go to greet them?"
"I suppose we should," Hygalia agreed, and took a deep breath. She held it for a moment and then let it out slowly, finishing with her sweetest smile. Looping her arm into his she ducked her head. "Will you escort me, Weyrleader?"
"Of course, My Weyrwoman," G'nir replied with a bow and offered her his arm. "Let's put up an united front, in all regard," he said. And that meant defending their junior gold against critizing holders.
