"Hello, J'nev. How are you doing?" the bluerider greeted and took a seat
across the young bronzerider, without waiting or asking permission.
Sharddit. J'nev was stuck with the bluerider now! "Fine," he mumbled,
staring intently at his spoon as it moved a finger root around in his soup
bowl.
"Really? I heard you had a close call with your sister's Gold's Mating
Flight," Sh'lua said. He placed his food and untensils to the table.
The bronzerider's head snapped up. "You heard _what_?" Now were they
spreading rumors about _him_ now, too?
"Oh, come on! You know how dragonriders like to gossip," Sh'lua said. "And
Onnyth went to Mating straight from the party."
"I was _not_ a part of that Flight," J'nev protested vehemently. He may
have been at the party, but as soon as there was any sign that the gold was
about to mate, he was out of there! Just what was this bluerider
insinuating?
"Nobody says you were. Just that you had to leave in a hurry. Trust me, I
know how that feels. I have way too many relatives with a green dragon,"
Sh'lua said with soothing tone.
"Well, what else was I supposed to do?" The bronzerider couldn't figure
out why Sh'lua seemed interested all of a sudden. He though maybe he
wanted some juicy Weyr-gossip, but said he already knew J'nev wasn't there.
So just what did he want to talk about it for? It sent a shiver of
revulsion down his spine just thinking what might have happened if he
hadn't run out of that room.
"It's the only thing you can do," Sh'lua agreed, mentally cursing some
busybody greenrider who had tendency to set him up to do things. This was
not going well, J'nev obviously wasn't interested. Or he just wasn't the
type to really talk about his feelings.
"Well, of course it is! Even the insinuation is disgusting." Especially
coming from a bluerider. They would stick it in just about anything, after
all.
"Nobody is insinuating anything, no need to get upset," Sh'lua said calmly.
But it was too late. J'nev was sure now that he was the butt of Weyr
gossip, and he didn't like it one bit! "Then why did you bring it up if
there wasn't some talk about it?"
"Because someone was worried about you, and thought that me, having similar
experiences, could help you. Obviously, you don't need any," Sh'lua
replied.
"I assure you, I would _never_ bed my sister. I would never even _want_
to do that!" Now his mind was really reeling! Just who was worried about
him? Who thought he needed anyone's help?
Sh'lua just sighed, man, the young bronzerider was now riled up.
"Who was it who sent you?" J'nev pressed, knowing that would bug him all
day if he didn't get an answer.
"Pick a quess," Sh'lua grumbled. "Who was there, doesn't chase, tends to
make blueriders to bend to his will and looks after young riders even after
they are no longer under his wing?"
"E'naer?" He was genuinely surprised. J'nev had not exactly been a model
weyrling, and they had plenty of run-ins in the past.
Sh'lua nodded. "So, go to complain him."
For once, the bronzerider was at a loss. Why would E'naer take so much
interest in him? And why wouldn't he have said something himself instead
of sending someone else in his place. "I wasn't complaining," he muttered,
still flustered.
"Whatever," the bluerider shrugged. He quickly finished his meal. "If you
ever want to tips how to avoid Flights, come to talk to me," he offered,
collecting his dishes and preparing to leave.
J'nev watched as Sh'lua gathered up his things, not sure what to say or
do. But as the bluerider turned to leave he said, "Tell E'naer thank you.
If you would."
"I will. Take care, J'nev," Sh'lua replied and got up to leave.
