A month had passed since the ill-fated premature labor that had
ended with her stillborn son. She was ... lost.
Oh, she was healthy enough physically. The healers had pronounced her
fit and fine a sevenday ago. She was a young, healthy, fit woman
after all, with tremendous recovery ability.
But emotionally... emotionally she was lost, like the riverboat when
it drifted free of its lines the first few moments. She was
desperate for the feeling of firmness that came with a sure hand on
the wheel, and she had not found it.
For once, perhaps for only the second time since she had married him,
she wished that Corowal and she shared a love match, and not one of
... excellent compatibility.. It might be easier. Still, he had
been amazing and wonderful to her since that day, taking every care
with his lovely wife. And he was sad, too. She was so grateful to
him for that care.... perhaps it would turn to love someday.
She sighed softly and glanced out the window at the dreary sky. Xebex
crooned in severe distress. Even her beloved blue flit had not been
able to cheer her. He, too, felt the loss of the tiny, perfect boy,
who had been born blue, like him. But he did never leave her side.
She scratched him, searching for the answer inside herself. She had
always been strong enough for anything. Anything. Even allowing her
husband a secret mistress to maintain the appearance of a proper
marriage.
No answer came. She was silent for a moment, letting her mind leap
from thought to thought without guidance. She wanted something,
needed something different, and with a tilt of her head she paused, an
idea coming to her fully formed, all in an instant.
Benani.
She would go to Benani, Benani and her babies.
She wasn't sure if that would hurt her worse, or help her, but once
decided, she wanted to follow the idea through.
Her voice was soft, and a little scratchy, as if unused for some time.
"Xebex. .. Xebex will you take a message?" She sent it, too, and her
blue flit's whine told her he had no interest in leaving her side to
carry a message, even if he could be right back.
**Please little love. It will help.**
After a bit more pleading, he relented and she pulled the bit of hide
and twine she used for running messages.
It was possible Benani would have heard. She probably had heard.
In that case, she would be brief.
Dearest Benani,
I must come. Look for me in three days.
Love to you.

The little blue was not interested in treats but Benani coaxed him to
let her have the message. When she was finally able to read it she
sighed. "Oh Felyna."
Of course the news had preceded her and Benani could feel the kind of
loss her friend must be experiencing. She went to work right away
making sure the guest apartments were aired and ready though she
didn't really have to check. Zelanka always had everything in had.
On the day appointed Benani had everything arranged and waited in her
solar that overlooked the the front of the house. It was just as
breakfast was being cleared that she stood and walked to the window to
peer up at the winter blue sky.
Being able to travel dragonback again was no consolation to her
feeling of loss. But, she supposed, it was handy. She finally could
go places quickly, and was not trapped in the Hold with her memories.
It was worrisome - a little - to leave her husband alone with Erassa
and the children, but she had to admit, she felt closer to Corowal
than ever after their experience. After all, it was his son too,
that had died.
Died. She said it in her mind again so she could understand it. Died.
Shaking from the cold of /between/ and another cold, she did perk up
when the arrived over Amber Hills. Benani would help.
The brown dragon deposited her gently, and his rider helped her with
her few bags. He had been kind and respectful, and waited patiently
near her until someone came to meet her.
Benani had spotted the dragon before it touched down so she was almost
at the front door by the time Felyna turned around. They were still
on the cusp of spring so while there wasn't snow in the ground there
was a chill in the air though Benani didn't bother to grab a wrap.
"Felyna," she waved as she headed down the stairs trailed by a pair of
drudges.
Relief flood Felyna's pale face and a smile curved her lips. It even
almost made it to her eyes. Suddenly, the world seemed lighter, and
her burden, if only at the thought of sharing it with someone else.
Her mother had taught to rely only on herself, and no one else, but
Felyna had learned on her own the value of good friendships, and she
was glad enough for a friend like Benani.
The drudges gathered up her belongings, while Felyna, her pale cheeks
pinking a little in the slightly chill air, rushed to Benani and held
her hands out to her friend. "Benani... thank you so much for
allowing me to come. I feel better already."
Benani wrapped her arms around Felyna in a fierce hug. "Of course,"
she whispered. Then she leaned back taking in the pale skin and
reddened eyes. Turning to the side she put her arm around the other
woman's waist. "Let's go inside where it's warmer. They'll grab your
bags." She waved to the drudge who were well trained by Zelanka and
already doing their jobs.
Felyna breathed a sigh of sweet relief when Benani hugged her. It
would be okay, now.
It had to be.
