Description: Reven purchases a worthy runner from Aivorn.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 4 of Turn 6
Notes: Notes: follows "the New Holder"
Mentioned: Sarban
Before Reven returned to Green Valley he needed to make one last
purchase- a runner. He had never his own personal mount when he had
been at Red Rush but as the Lord over Green Valley he wanted a trusted
runner that could see him around the territory when necessary.
Heading out to the stables alone, Reven hoped that whoever was there
could help him pick out a beast suitable for his needs.
Aivorn leaned to a fence, watching over the journeyman training young
runners. A canine was sitting next to his leg, one of those used to
herd herdbeasts. She whined when she noticed the approaching holder
and that got Aivorn's attention turned to him. "Hello, sir. Can I help
you?"
Reven squinted against the sunlight, "I am looking to purchase a
runner." He told Aivorn noting the rank cords on the man's shoulder.
"Well, you got the right man then. What kind of runner, a mount, to
carry carriages or pull a plough on a field?" Aivorn replied.
"I need a mount that is going to be a good riding companion." Reven
answered looking out at some of the runners that were grazing.
"All right, can you give me more details? Young one or more mature,
fully trained one? Most of those are for sale," he nodded towards the
runners on the pasture. "They all under three turns old."
"I want a fully trained mount, I don't have time to be breaking in a
runner. At least three Turns in age." Reven answered, hands in his
pockets. He really had no other preferences.
"What kind of rider you are?" Aivorn asked. His questions had a
purpose. He wanted to find a best runner possibly for him and that
meant screening out the young man.
Reven had to pause at that question, "Well, the only riding I have
ever done has been to reach some of the outlying crops, so I guess you
could say I am an infrequent rider. Although I do plan on changing
that."
"So, relatively inexperienced. You need a runner who is easy to handle
and loyal. I think I have a right beast for you," Aivorn replied and
gestured Reven to follow him. He walked into the stables. A stable boy
was grooming a large stallion, grey with with mane and stockings.
"This is Ghrey. I got him in exhange from Luter. I tried racing him,
but he's too heavy built for speed. He's a good mount though, very
strong and reliable, and able to cross long distances without tiring."
For Reven it was love at first sight. The beautiful deep blue-gray
sheen of the animal was incredible, especially highlighted by the
stark white mane and stockings.
"He's perfect. I am sure we will get along great." Reven told Aivorn.
"You know, that's not the right way to bargain," Aivorn chuckled. He
could understand his feelings. "Let's take him out, so you can try
riding him," he continued and told the groom to bring the saddle.
Reven watched as the runner was saddled, he noted how calmly the
animal took to the process, which was performed, he was sure, in
record time by the stablehand. This was his runner, Reven was sure of
it, even without riding creature. Of course, Reven had also been sure
he was going to marry Ellayne, and that hadn't happened. **Better give
this guy a test ride as the Master suggests.** He decided.
"Here you go, take him to a spin and then we can talk about prize,"
Aivorn said, hiding a smile. He could understand the instand love for
the animal. When the right mount came across, you just knew it. "I
have breeding plans for him. I'm sure his and Iron Maiden's offspring
will be expectional."
Reven swung up into the saddle, and although he was not as smooth and
graceful as a more experienced rider he was competent nonetheless.
With a nod to Aivorn, Reven whirled Ghrey out of the stables and
cantered out into one of the practice fields. The stallion felt solid
beneath him, spirited and confident. Reven had only to lean in the
direction he wished to go and Ghrey responded.
Ghrey galloped back toward the stable at Reven's direction and the
holder smiled as he dismounted, "He's fantastic."
"You two looked good together," Aivorn complimented.
"Thank you, Master Aivorn. I definitely think he is the runner for
me." Reven answered, patting the runner's neck.
"Then only thing to left is settle the prize," Aivorn replied.
"Name it." Reven replied, his eyes still on the runner.
Aivorn mentioned a sum. It was hight, but then he was high-quality runner.
"I can lower it if I can have free breeding rights," he added.
Reven considered it for a moment, "You can have the breeding rights." He
knew the runner's bloodline would have been a good asset to Green Valley
but he also didn't have the money Aivorn was asking.
"It's a deal then. Let's have Sarban draw the contract," Aivorn replied.
