Though a part of him still buzzed with elation he refused to
acknowledge, another part of Daihmin was awe it didn't all end there.
He'd a report to make, and drunks to see to. He doubted the captain
himself would be awake at this hour- though these days, you never
knew but he could at least get the ball rolling.
With which he turned away and headed towards his next destination.
And the captain was indeed awake, nearly colliding with Daimhin
as they met in the hallway. Karhal caught himself before he bowled
his friend over and shook his head. "Ah..just the man I needed to see."
Daihmin nodded in distracted greeting.
"Don't you ever sleep these days, sir? Then again, I can't say I am
sorry to see you. I've something to report that shall need to take
precedence, I fear. There's a pair of drunkards loitering in our care
that need to meet the full might of Zathris' temper, and a friend of
theirs who thinks he doesn't have to."
"On occasion when I can." Karhal listened and then arched his brow.
The situation with Loella was locked away for the time being as he
digested Daimhin's news. "What happened?"
"3 drunk fools who should have known to be in bed 2 bottles ago
accosted one of the Hold's respectable married women instead. Nothing
direly serious..." It took gritted teeth to say that
"... words, but I have no idea if it might have escalated without
intervention. The lady is quite safely home."
And he hoped that might gloss over the fact his respectable married
lady had been night prowling like a foolish young maid.
"Accosted her?" Karhal's brows snapped down in displeasure. "Well...
we can let them sober up and perhaps the lady's husband will want
charges pressed or to speak to them himself." He paused and then
turned in thought. "What was said Lady doing out and about at this
hour?" He looked at Daimhin and arched a brow. "Do I need to guess
who this lady was or do I already know?"
"Master Makarl's wife, sir. Sinla."
As to the second, he hesitated. He sure as thread wasn't explaing
she'd been looking for him. Silly, dear woman.
"I am not certain, but...her husband is away, sir. Her brother's the
healer. Perhaps she'd night nerves or wanted friendly company."
Not a lie, even, in any of the statements.
"One of them slipped away, unfortunatly. It hardly seems fair on his
comrades to let him be."
Karhal simply arched a brow and shook his head. "Well, the next
time you see her, Daimhin, you need to explain that at nights,
she needs to stay in. Next time you may not be so available."
He rubbed his chin in thought. "No, it doesn't. Did you recognize
the man?"
"Oh I did! Believe me. I can empathise, but I can't approve! But then,
women tend to be creatures of impulse and emotion."
A certain softness to that tone suggested he found that womaly trait
more endearing then annoying.
"Which is probably the cue for me to mention there was a standard
patrol not so far away they should have failed to hear it. Snoozing
and daydreaming! Which we can't allow."
To Karhal's question, he nodded.
"I think I'd recognize him. I am hoping his friends may be keen to
give him up, though. Maybe threat of a few weeks work under Zelenka's
tongue will scare them enough!"
"Send that guard to my office after you are through with him." Karhal's
voice was no longer even slightly amused. "As for the young men,
I think Zelanka may need help scrubbing kitchen pots and may continue
to need help until their friend shows up."
He stopped and then looked at Daimhin. "Women are indeed...." He jaw
twitched. "And sometimes get under our skin at the most inconvenient
times and ways."
With the important business off his mind a little, Daihmin picked up
on a certain..something in the Captain's tone.
"Trouble with a lady of your own, sir?
There was a long pause; Karhal didn't often speak of his personal life,
being a private man, but Daimhin was his closest friend. Taking a long,
slow breath, Karhal's mouth twitched. "Do you remember Loella? Orhla's
sister?"
A couple of thoughts flited through Daihmin's shifty little head, but
he kept his answer simple in deference. "Yes, I do."
There was a long slow breath and Karhal's voice was soft. "She
told me that she's in love with me." He looked up at Daimhin and
his lips thinned. "Don't you dare laugh."
Daimhin propped a boot against the wall behind him, leaning back.
"I wouldn't. Its suprising, perhaps, but hardly funny. Sweet, really.
She seems a nice girl, if ferocious."
Ferocious was a good word for the girl. But sweet? Karhal exhaled
sharply though his nose. "I..I told the girl I would approach her
father about courting her." He looked at Daimhin. He didn't want
to admit that he had doubts about doing that. He knew though, that
eventually, he'd be expected to remarry, but he'd never expected
his dead wife's sister to become a factor. "I'm nearly old
enough to be her father, Daimhin." He paused and then looked
at his friend consideringly. "But you aren't...."
Daihmin wanted to grin. It *was* kind of amusing to see the man this
thrown for a loop. Of course, very deep down there was a twang of
jealousy too. What he wouldn't give to have a pretty girl running
after him. **Avoid thinking about that. Think about the Captain's
prediciment instead.**
He settled for arching a cooly amused brow, hoping most of that train
of thought stayed off his face.
"Some girls like older men. Shards, my own mother's younger then my
father. You probably seem sensible, settled and strong to her."
He flicked a naughtier grin. "Good thing she only sees the
Holder-approved version, eh?"
"You aren't helping, Daihmin." Karhal sighed. He hadn't had to
deal with this sort of thing in Turns. His own previous marriage
had been arranged, and before that, he'd been more concentrated
on his duties. He'd been no innocent then, of course, but he had
been younger. Karhal finally gave a half-smile. "You're going to
leave me hanging, aren't you?"
"Oh, I'm sorry...was I mean't to be *helping*? Then I'll be sure to
remind her to notice your upstanding character, duitiful tendencies
and decently full mark-pouch, too."
He was teasing, but gently. He had meant it when he said he thought
the news sweet. And probably something his Captain needed even more
then he did was the lightening presence and warm affection of a
partner to fend off some of his darker moods.
"Come now, Karhal, you can't be seeking *sympathy* for having a pretty
face bamboozled enough to think you're worth chasing up. So what's
really bothering you?"
Finally chuckling at Daimhin's humor, Karhal stared at the man and
crossed his arms. "Not sympathy, you smart ass." He ran a hand through
his short cropped hair, mussing it. "I didn't know. I didn't
know she felt that way. All of the signs were there and I'm guessing
that's why she never found a husband." His jaw twitched. He wasn't
used to not picking up on things and it frustrated the blazes out of
him. She frustrated him.
Daihmin caught the twitch. He had no sympathy! He just chuckled.
"Welcome to dealings with the fairer sex. That's 'fairer' in the looks
sense, not the way they handle their men!"
"Some day, Daimhin, you'll be going through something similar
and I'm going to be just as merciless." Karhal finally chuckled
and shook his head. "I'll deal with the matter. Now, lets go
see these drunkards of yours."
Daihmin's grin softened slighty.
"Women are fickle creatures, sir, but...I hope good things come of it."
A little more awkwardly, he added,
"And, if you need any help in the dealing, I am here...talk, klah, you know."
He said nothing about the Captain's *other* mention. If the man had
any *idea* where Daihmin's thoughts had run off to when he wasn't
watching them carefully, he doubted the man would feel half so kindly
in return.
Still, he hoped it would turn out well for Karhal at least. Give some
hope all around.
