Series: The Unwanted Sister
Characters: Reven, Coran
Description: Reven broaches the subject of marriage to his brother Coran.
Location: Green Valley Hold
Date: month 12, day 25 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Corowal, Relea, Leaton (not by name)
Reven inclined his head to a couple of young women, he would guess
five to six Turns younger than himself, and he smiled when he heard
them giggle to each other as they passed. It was quite a well known
fact now that Lord Corowal had advised the young Holder to marry
quickly and produce an heir. Since that moment, Reven had found that
wherever he went there were at least two to three females of marrying
age around, usually batting their eyelashes and giggling behind their
hands. He had to admit that it was pretty entertaining.
Stepping into the small infirmary that lay at the heart of Green
Valley, Reven looked around for a moment, past two other journeymen to
a familiar face. His brother Coran. After obtaining his Journeyman
status Coran had returned to Green Valley to work. Nearly three Turns
younger than Reven, Coran was every bit as tall as his older brother,
and had the same broad shoulders, and long legs. They could almost be
twins if it wasn't for the differing shades of hair and eye color.
When Coran looked up to see his brother approaching he grinned a
little and threw his hands into the air, "Faranth be praised! The
Holder descends to talk with the commoners!"
"Yeah, yeah." Reven picked up a stylus from Coran's desk and threw it
at his brother, who used both hands to shield himself from the attack.
"But seriously," Coran said around his laughter, "what brings you here?"
"Maybe I just wanted to catch up with my brother?" Reven suggested
with a raised eyebrow as he took a seat beside of Coran's desk.
Coran raised his eyebrow in return, "Yeah, right, and Thread has
miraculously disappeared forever." The sarcasm was rich.
The Holder laughed, the banter with his brother making him realize how
much he had missed Coran. Since they were the closest in age out of
their other siblings they had also been closer as friends, "Well, I
have a bit of a dilemma on my hands and I was hoping you could
help...." He trailed off, unsure of how to broach the topic of taking
on a wife to his widower of a brother.
The journeyman healer leaned back in his chair, spearing his brother
with a suspicious look, "Allright."
"How long now has it been since Alyei passed?"
Coran's eyes narrowed immediately, his countenance becoming
considerably colder, "A Turn and three months. Why?"
Reven shifted in his chair, "I was wondering if you had considered remarrying?"
"No."
"Well, there's this girl," Reven began to launch into his story of
Relea but Coran held up his hand to shush him.
"No, Reven, I'm not interested." Coran shook his head.
"Oh come on," Reven sat up straighter in the chair.
"No, I don't care how great she is, how pretty she is, she's not Alyei
and therefore I am not interested."
The Holder considered that for a moment, "I could make you."
Coran laughed, his eyebrows shooting up into his hairline, "Oh really? How?"
"Throw you in a headlock and scrub your head until you give in.... Or
tell mom." Reven pointed out, chuckling.
The healer shook his head, laughing at the mental picture that Reven
was painting, "I'd like to see you try, brother. We're not little
kids any more, I'm pretty sure I could hold my own now."
Reven rolled his eyes, "Oh, please, I've been spending the last ten
Turns working in the fields, hard manual labor, and you've been
pushing papers."
The two shared a laugh over that before Reven continued, "But
seriously, Coran, you're only twenty-five, are you telling me that
you're just going to live alone forever? Maybe this woman, Relea is
her name by the way, isn't what you want in a wife, but you could at
least meet her."
Coran slumped in his chair a little and sighed, "If she's so great why
are you here telling me about her? Why isn't she here herself?"
"She's deaf," Reven said simply, "and her brother's just trying to
pawn her off on the first man he can find. I've been tasked with
aiding to find her a husband, although I am more interested in
securing a profitable match for her, rather than just shipping her out
to a task master. Before you ask," he held up his hand, "she talks
with her hands, a language she has created, it's very interesting and
I'm sure you would pick up on it quickly."
As a healer, Coran had met other such individuals who were deaf and
spoke with sign language, although each use of the language was
different, almost like dialects, "I'll think about it, Reven, but no
promises."
Reven stood, seeing that it was as good as he was going to get,
"That's all I ask. I'll let you get back to your work now, I actually
have some of my own I need to do."
Coran stood, holding his hand out to his brother, "It's good to have
you back Reven."
Taking Coran's hand he pulled his brother into a single shoulder hug
which consisted of slapping each other on the back, "Aye, we'll catch
up properly soon."
