Zathris

"Wirnan." Zathris smiled to the man as he entered the office. The
poor guy had been through some really tough times. Wirnan hadn't
really talked about it, but one didn't need to be told the full story
to see that life was weighing down on him. "Sit."

"Zathris," Wirnan greeted the Lord Holder and his friend. He took a
seat, expecting to discuss Hold matters with Zathris.

"Anything I need to know about particularly?" Zathris smiled at the
man across from him. He'd been through so much and yet had talked so
little about what was going on in his personal life. Yet, something
was different that day. It wasn't a tremendous difference, but for
someone who had worried over his friend for so long, Zathris could see
the change, even if it was small. There was...more light in his eyes
somehow.

Wirnan furrowed his brow as he look at his friend and Lord Holder.
"Something with the Hold, you mean?" Wirnan hadn't expected a full
meeting on Hold matters and hadn't prepared for such things
completely. "I can go and retrieve the more recent hides if you would
like." He wasn't picking up on the underlying meaning behind the
question.

"No, that's all right. I was just wondering if there was anything
that had come up since we last met." Zathris leaned back in his
chair, one hand playing at his chin. "Nothing unusual going on, I
presume."

Wirnan frowned and thought hard about what he could be missing. "Well,
I spoke with Karhal about the canines, but he said he'd already spoken
to you on that issue. Otherwise, it's been normal daily Hold business
with nothing unusual to report."

"Yes, we've spoken. I want you to aid him as best you can. He's hit
on a good idea and I'd like to see it flourish." Zathris eyed his
Steward for a moment, longer, then shrugged. "Well, if there's
nothing else, I'll see you tomorrow. Why don't you go ahead and go
home. It's rather quiet today."

"Aye, it is rather quiet," Wirnan was still uncertain as to why
Zathris had called this short meeting. He sat, his face still showing
confusion. "Is there another reason you asked me here...other than to
talk business?" He needed to know else he would worry on the matter
the remainder of the day.

"I have to admit, I wanted to see how you were doing." Zathris gave
Wirnan a half smile. "Keeping an eye on a friend, I guess you'd say."

His eyes opened a bit wider as realization began to dawn, "You mean,
_other_ than work! I see." Wirnan paused after than, uncertain what,
if anything, he wanted to say. "Things are...okay."

"Okay?" Well that was some progress at least. The last time they
really sat down to talk, Wirnan had been full of dispair, his eyes
dull, expression drooping. That seemed, at the very least, a little
elss intense.

He shrugged and sighed a bit, sitting back in his chair. "I mean,
we're at least trying to talk...sometimes. We're cordial to each other
and aren't arguing as much as we were before." He frowned however,
"though I don't think there's any love there at all and I'm not sure
there ever will be."

"Well, don't give up on it yet, Wirnan. I'm glad to hear things are
getting better...never say never." Zathris did hope that things would
continue to improve, and he did hope they would learn to love each
other. He hated the fact that politics had forced the two into such a
situation. He felt more sorry for Wirnan than Kaya, of course. After
all, it had been her doing that had caused it.

Wirnan nodded. He hadn't given up, not completely. Just when he felt
he wanted to give up, Kaya would do something that gave him a glimmer
of hope for them.

"We're working on it," he finally replied, uncertain what else to say.

"Glad to hear it." For a long time, they hadn't been working on
anything. Zathris' felt encouraged by that simple change. "Well, if
everything looks good, we'll meet again in a few days." Progress was
progress and maybe it wasn't the leap he wished that would happen, but
at least the two were no longer stagnant. Maybe...just maybe...things
would finally work out happily.
