Wirnan

Wirnan

Wirnan sighed before opening the door to his quarters. Life with Kaya
had reached a bit of a stalemate. Most days they just politely spoke
to each other as two faint acquaintances might do. There was no love
there. They tolerated each other. It wasn't the life he'd wanted, but,
truth be told, he _did_ enjoy the companionship most days.

Opening the door, he wondered what would be waiting for him this
night. It was the same as every night. She was there, either doing
laundry, maybe cleaning. That was what she did each and every day.
Her strength had returned and she didn't tire easily any longer. It
had
been a long road to recovery, but recover she had. Kaya was just
putting the area rug back in its place after having cleaned it. Her
eyes lifted to the door when he strode through and she nodded, but
that was the only greeting the girl gave her husband.

It wouldn't be much longer. There was a caravan due soon and she'd
managed to scrap up enough to barter and trade with. He didn't want
her, and she didn't want to stay somewhere she wasn't wanted. She
regretted the choices she had made, but she had made them. He didn't
have to be stuck with them. If anything, it would be a kindness.

It was dinnertime and even though they weren't particularly near the
kitchens, the scent of dinner wafted through the door as Wirnan
stepped through it. Kaya's stomach growled despite itself and she
turned away to straighten a side table. "Dinner?" She finally asked,
so to speak, as she straightened up.

He watched her for a moment, wishing he knew what to say or do. He
wanted to open the communication between them, but it just seemed as
though they never could.

"Dinner would be fine," he replied, waiting for her to join him. "Did
you have a good day?" He always asked, always tried to engage her in
conversation. What else could he do?

"Fine." Kaya wasn't going to go into details. He didn't really want
to know how people looked at her, how she had little in the way of
friends. How she just wanted to get out of there and get on with her
life - and let him get on with his. "Let's go."

He really hadn't expected much else. This had become their life. He
wanted something more, but didn't know how to break down the walls
that sat between them.

"My day went well also," he told her as they started to walk. "Just
another typical day in the office." Really nothing exciting had
happened. It was the same old, same old, just like his relationship
with Kaya.

"That's good." Their lives were monotonous whether they were together
or apart. Frankly, it was all Kaya could do to keep herself together
on some days. She sometimes fount tears springing forth despite her
attempts to keep them at bay. She didn't want to feel like that. She
just wanted to move on. She'd get her chance soon, though not soon
enough.

She ducked out into the hallway after Wirnan and fell into step beside
him. There was a space between them. No love was lost, there hadn't
been any to begin with. Now it was...what...indifference? She didn't
know what it was . She just knew that whatever it was, it made them
both miserable.
