G'nir

G'nir

He was exhausted. It had been a long and tiring day, with
grueling drills, but P'nal felt like the
wing had made some progress. The
brownrider pulled off his gloves and grabbed a warm mug
of
klah.

"Aaah, that was exhausting," G'nir remarked, taking off his
helmet and running his fingers through
his hair. It made it stick out in
every direction, but he didn't care.

"Indeed, but better to work now and
get it right. I thought R'ewqi finally got it right there at the last."
That
was a good observation since it seemed like the greenrider was
hopeless.

"Enough repetition will bound it down even to the densest
skull," G'nir said with nod of agreement.
"Let's get down to Dining cavern
for a drink," he suggested.

Grabbing his klah, P'nal got up and followed,
sipping as he walked. When they got there, they took
their seats at the usual
table. "Hmmm..." he said in pleasure as he continued to drink the warm
liquid.

"My thoughts exactly," G'nir said. He and P'nal had worked
together long enough now for the bronzerider
to relax and let down his guard
around him.

"So I'm guessing by the sheen of her hide, it's going to be
Onnyth in the air soon." P'nal knew as a brownrider
he didn't have much
chance, but he still noticed these things.

"Yeah. Well, Nirreth is
probably going to chase, although I hope he don't. He already has a mate,"
G'nir
replied and gestured a drudge for them. He placed an order for food and
drink. "You want something, P'nal?"
he nodded towards the
drudge.

"Pasta and meatballs?" That would be warm, meaty, and full of
energy. He needed it after the buttkicking he'd
just gone through. And
besides, a man had to keep his weight up. "With bread, salad, and uh...wine.
Yep."

The girl curtsied and went to get the food. G'nir leaned
backwards.

"How's your shoulder?" He remembered the Weyrleader saying
something about it being sore, so it was good to
ask. At any rate, he didn't
have anything else to ask just then.

"Getting better. I just managed to
twist it while catching a firestone sack," G'nir replied. "Anything juicy going
on?"

"Mm well I haven't heard from J'darin so I can't say on that end.
You'd know more about U'kaiah than me. Oh, right-
D'ale is up to something. I
haven't yet figured it out, but something's going on there." P'nal recalled
snatches of their
conversation and puzzled over it again.

"Probably
some woman, that's what he's usually up to," G'nir replied.

"Aye well I
asked about Kenza and I think that's done from the reaction I got. So that means
it's an unknown. He was
so secretive about it, though. If it was someone in
the Weyr, you know someone would have bragged about it." The women
in the
Lower Caverns were predictable. If they could snatch a high ranking rider,
they'd want folks to know.

"Faranth, I just hope he's not messing around
with hold woman," G'nir said and shook his head. "Well, enough of him,
here
is the dinner." The drudge brought over their food and drinks and set them to
the table.

It was some time spent in companionable silence as the men
ate. P'nal dug into his meal, celebrating it as he chewed and
swallowed. A
good meal put meat on a man's bones. When he had made enough headway, he took a
drink and remarked,
"How's things with the Holders?"

"The same, which
is the way I prefer it," G'nir said. "They pay their tithe in time and we keep
their fields and holds free
of Thread," he continued, swirling his drink
around in glass.

Shrugging his acceptance of that, the wingsecond went
back to eating. He wondered if G'nir would ever be the sort of man
to settle
down. Not that he really was, yet, himself. Still, it could give more stability
to the fellow. Not that it was any of his
business. "So, would you say I've
done a good job as wingsecond?" He'd have an official evaluation at some point,
but P'nal
liked to know these things.

"Yes, you have," G'nir said. "I
especially like that you can do your job independently, instead of running into
my office

for every five minutes for advice. I
feel I can count on you," and from him, that was high praise.

That was
satisfying. P'nal knew he probably never would have been chosen if he rode
bronze, but that was fine with him. As
it was, he was giving back to the Weyr
and it did feel good to know he was leading a wing well. "Thank you sir. You're
a fine
Weyrleader you know."

"Thank you. We work well together, don't
we," G'nir replied.
