Why exactly was he here again?
He seemed to remember something about 'day off' in relation to today....
Truthfully, though, there was a part of the guard that was never off
duty. Hence why he was standing in front of his captain when he should
be looking for a pretty girl to entertain instead.
"Sorry to bother, sir. Thought you'd want to know, though. There's
lights out near the storerooms... *again*"
Lights went out, it happened. It was why they had technicians running
around, after all. However it had been happening in that *specific*
area rather a lot of late. Daihmin suspected pranksters at the
least...and there was always the possability of something more
sinister, as well.
Karhal looked up and arched a brow, setting aside his hidework
for a moment before giving a brief smile. "You don't know the
meaning of day off do you?" His teeth flashed for a moment in a
grin. "You're getting far too like me, you know."
He paused and then tilted his head before drumming his fingers on his desk.
"Again? Hm... Have the technicians checks to see if there is
a problem in the wiring?"
"The last one I spoke to claims to have. Several times."
That summary was far milder then the actual rant had been. Seems some
people were touchy when you implied their work was dodgy.
"I'm starting to suspect it means some kid is playing with the urge to
short *themselves* out. Dimglow..."
His lips twisted a moment
"...which is what we will be back to, of course, if some silly brat
blows the system. You know the technicians have to have a lie down and
a steadying drink before they can think about work."' The twisty grin
broadened to a smile.
"I'm pretty sure I *do* know that meaning sir. Just this thing called
*work* keeps interfering."
Karhal scratched his head, then rubbed his chin. "Hmm...is there someone we
can use among the staff to ferret out the information maybe? It'd be too
obvious to have a guard stationed there, and even then, we shouldn't have to.
Hm....Or we could simply place a lock on the door, but I think Zelanka
may have objections to that."
Karhal gave a smile and shook his head at Daihmin. "Zelanka will be after
you next about working too hard. "
"The secret to Zelenka is to charm her til you see those dimples."
He grinned."And then set her onto some other poor soul instead. I keep a steady
list of miscreants for just that reason."
He considered the more sensible part of the Captain's speech.
"Possibly, though most of the wise-boys around here know us all by
sight. Maybe we can get one of the technicians themselves involved.
Might seem less circumstantial coming from one of them."
"Me? Charm? I don't have the knack that you do." Karhal gave a wry chuckle.
"I'll leave that to you. Now..." He looked up at Daihmin and slowly smiled.
"Have you talked to any of the more agreeable lads in the hold? The technicians
would be good to get involved, but we may get some young lad in here, especially
if he looks up to the guards. Know of anyone like that?"
Daihmin matched the chuckle. "That's what they all say, sir!"
But his consideration of the question was serious.the man never took
his work less then seriously.
"I'm not so sure how you want to define 'agreeable', unless it
includes surly. There's a lad I can think off though. And it might be
to the best for him. He could do with the attention I think, It might
make him."
He snorted, on a private thought about father's who did not encourage
their sons. Some men didn't know how lucky they were.
Tilting his head at the snort, Karhal's brow raised. "Which lad were
you considering?"
His fingers drummed on the desk and a slight smile lifted his lips.
"You're thinking of something beyond this little enterprise, aren't you?"
"His name's Mihal"
Daihmin wasn't sure if the captain would recognise it or not.
"Smart lad, under employed if you ask me. His family think he's a
touch too smart for his own good though. Honestly I can't call him
altogether sparkling to deal with, but we were all sulky at that age,
and I think something could be done with him in the right hands,
myself. He could be useful."
"Mihal..." Karhal frowned, recalling the boy. "Sullen, a bit of
a smart-arse, right?" He rubbed his chin in thought. "I think you're
right. He is intelligent and sly..." His eyes flicked to Daihmin
and his smile widened. "Looking to groom the boy, are you?"
He nodded. "It could work."
"A lot of a smartass, sadly." Daihmin sighed.
"But he's quick-eyed too. And I think he may hold out on everyone a
little...I'm fairly sure he picks up gossip all around."
That was a bit rich, coming from him. Daihmin blushed slightly at
Karhal's next words, though he didn't offer an explanation. He was a
mate-and-family orientated man. Simply not actually having any of
those didn't make that any less of an instinct.
"Anyway, its worth thinking on. 'Cos I'm going to throttle someone if
the keep interfering with the system like that...and I'd like to at
least have the pleasure of knowing its the right someone!"
At the man's flush, Karhal eased up on the teasing, but a smile still
played around his mouth. "Let bring him in then and have a bit of
a chat with him." He leaned back, stroking his chin. "We'll have to
have something to offer him. Any ideas?"
"I think attention alone would do that, though no doubt with mumbled
curses and sulks for effect, since we are all adults."
Daihmin smiled a little less firecly then his tone.
"I also think the chance to put smarts to work will be enough to lure
him. But we could convince them all it was a routine thing, maybe even
over the lights. Let whatever smartass is doing it think they bluffed
oh so well to put us old fogies off the scent?"
Karhal nodded in agreement."Excellent idea." His lips lifted again."Are you
sure that it's not this boy himself trying to get attention? If he's not getting
enough at home, he may well be trying to get any kind he can. It happens.
Attention is attention sometimes, even if it's not the kind you'd normally
like."
"I think he's a little too smart to be dicking with dangerous things.
I may be wrong though. But I also can't help but think there's more
then just one bored youth behind the tinkering."
He snorted "That could be my inner need to see criminal conspiracies, though."
"Your inner need is sometimes valuable." Karhal rose and came around the desk.
"Let's go see the lad and break this little game, shall we?"
"Indeed"
Daihmin gestured to his captain to preceede him through the door.
