Walking lightly with Livie heeled at his side, Karhal waited until
Zathris had finished with dinner and the drudges had begun to clean up
the remainder of dinner. Before the Lord Holder could rise, Karhal
stepped beside him and bent, speaking softly. "My Lord, might I have a
word before you retire?"

"Of course." The evening's shadows played tricks upon those who
trekked through them, but Zathris could see well enough to know who
was approaching him. He smiled at the guard and motioned for him to
walk alongside.

Karhal nodded and moved aside, then walked beside the Lord Holder, his
boots making soft clicks on the floor. "I had an idea that I wanted to
approach you about regarding the Hold." He tapped his right leg and Livie
moved up to walk quietly beside him. "A matter of bringing in marks,
actually. With whers being costly to raise and wanted more for the mines,
canines like Livie can be an alternative for guarding. I could raise and train them
much like I did her and you could offer them to other Holds."

Zathris paused in his walk and gazed down at the canine that had joined
them. "Interesting. You train them?" Of course, canines were very useful
and could be trained for all sorts of jobs. It hadn't really occurred to
him to use them as guards, though it certainly seemed something that they
would be good for.

Karhal nodded. "Yes, I do. Livie is capable of holding someone, guarding,
or attacking if commanded. Very intelligent and if bred to the right male canine,
I think it could pass to her pups. Some holds not able to afford wher
eggs or the care of whers may be interested in canines like that, provided
that they have competent guards to pair them with."

The Lord Holder thought over the possibilities. "Could you give a
demonstration?"

Karhal nodded briefly. "Of course. We'll have to go to my office and get
my padded jacket and fetch another guard. I could show you the basics now if you
like, but to show you her attack skills, we'll need the equipment."

"I'm afraid I don't have time right now...but how about tomorrow after
lunch?" Zathris was getting more and more interested the more Karhal told
him.

"That will be just fine. I'll have time to prepare the other guard as well.
They don't always like being Livie's bait." Karhal's lips lifted slightly. "I can promise
that you won't be disappointed."

"Well I look forward to it then."
