Description: Young brownrider meets with the wingsecond.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 12 of Turn 6
"So how are things going? Adjusting okay?" the wingsecond asked with
a bit of practical concern as he looked over some of the notes made of
K'ale's performance since joining the wing. The brownrider was a good
solid rider but he did have some things to learn and some habits to
form. It would come with time, for certain.
Considering the Wingsecond probably wasn't talking about his recent
flight win he decided to leave that experience out of the
conversation. He'd talked about that one with his da and was certain
he'd adjust just fine. It was just a fact of a brownrider's life. "I
think so sir," he smiled. He was feeling comfortable in drills and
learning to respond correctly to orders as far as he could tell.
"Good. And how is Imalkyth finding it? Any issues with wingmates I
should be aware of?" The boy seemed well rounded, but that didn't mean
others might not take issue anyway.
That made K'ale smile. "He is quite fierce when it comes to flaming
thread." He could feel his lifemate almost tremble with something akin
to anger or hunger when they were about to launch the wing. He was
very intense in his need to flame the enemy from the sky.
He didn't want to create any issues for anyone else but there was a
bluerider always mouthing off during drills and it was beginning to
drive K'ale up the wall. The running commentary from 'mouth' needed to
be shut down but the older brownrider seemed not to really hear it.
Either that or he ignored it. "Can you make W'les shut up?" He threw
it out as a joke.
"Huh?" That sort of took P'nal by surprise, especially the way that
K'ale spoke of his older wingmate.
"It's distracting," he added. "Especially when we're trying to learn a
new pattern and he just keeps talking over the leaders."
"Ahhh.....can I ask you a question, K'ale?" he put his hand down flat
on the desk as he spoke. "When you're fighting thread, do you have
distractions?"
"No sir," he said a little puzzled. "Imalkyth and I are very focused
when we're fighting thread."
"What I'm saying is, when you fight thread, there are also
distractions up there in the air. Other dragons around you fighting,
other riders shouting, all sorts of things. However, you can block
them out to do what you need to do. Drills are practice for actual
threadfall. So we give you distractions there as well to make sure you
can do what you need to do despite them. Does that make sense?" Of
course P'nal would still have a word with the other rider to tone it
down, but it was necessary for K'ale to understand he would always
have something trying to claim
his attention.
"I suppose," he nodded. He was still new, he realized that much and
the Wingsecond was a good teacher when it came to getting the job done
in a Fall. He knew just from watching the other brownrider just
whatkinds of things were expected of him. Browns were the steady
backbone of the wing helping to keep things organized. They did their
share of flaming but the greens and blues were better and faster at
that. He really did see the need for him to be able to process
everything happening around him and help his little slice of the wing
work together in the organized chaos of Threadfall.
"Was there anything else that you wanted to ask about?" he questioned
as he scribbled a few notes to go on later.
K'ale thought a moment then shook his head. "No sir," he said.
