They came out from the nothing of /between/ with a pop. Arippa clung
to the brownrider as he had told her to as they spiraled down gently
toward Emerald Falls Hold.
Arippa hadn't been able to believe that the Weyr had sent both a brown
and a green to take her and her luggage to Emerald Falls. The young
brownrider was quite good looking too. She and her sister had giggled
about that behind their hands before their father had quelled them
with a stern look.
Tavia had come along on this assignment partly to stretch Sawauth's
wings and partly to be available should the young lady prefer to ride
with a woman than a man. The baby was with Ranari while she spent her
afternoon on this transport duty. She was finding she enjoyed getting
out for a change and relished the chance to fly again.
The small two dragon formation touched down lightly in the gather
square of Emerald Falls hold while residents came toward them. Some
of the men got close enough to help with the unloading.
S'benn slid from his dragon's back and handed the Lady down carefully.
Felyna slipped out into the courtyard with a warm and welcoming smile
for the young woman dismounting from the brown dragon. She waited
until Arippa had steadied herself on the ground again.
Smiling at the brownrider and the greenrider in welcome, she stepped
toward Arippa and held out her hands in greeting. "Hello, You must be
Arippa!" Of course, they had known she was coming, and who, so there
was no doubt of the young woman's identity. She did look familiar,
though Felyna was fairly sure they had never met on her visits to
Amber Hills.
Her smile broadened to the dragonriders, and she added. "My duty to
you, riders, for bringing our new Resident to us!"
Her green eyes sparkled with true delight, happy to have another young
woman to spend time with, and to share gossip.
Dressed as she was, there might have been some slight doubt - she was
wearing a 'normal' dress with her blond hair pulled practically but
attractively up in a bun - but even if there was no doubt, she still
said, "I"m Felyna. Be welcome here."
"Thank you S'benn," she murmured to the brownrider. Then she turned to
Lady Felyna and dropped a 'family' sort of curtsy as she would have to
her Aunt Benani and Uncle Zathris before taking her hands and smiling
at the very warm welcome.
"I am," she affirmed. "And very happy to be here Lady Felyna. Thank
you for having me."
Tavia dropped her own deeper bow to the Lady alongside the young
brownrider. The Emerald Falls leaders were always welcoming to
dragonriders. This was her first 'light duty' assignment after
Kaiavin's birth and she was enjoying the excursion with Sawauth.
S'benn whispered to the greenrider. "What do we do now?"
Tavia continued smiling. "We wait until the Ladies begin to walk away
then we unload."
Although he knew Felyna likely had everything in hand, Sarban couldn't help
but be curious. Corowal had said the girl would be young so he held no allusions
about whether or not she would be suitable for him. Standing off to the side,
he watched as the two women came up closer to the entrance, ready to greet
them when they came closer.
Arippa scanned the faces around them but didn't see Namrien anywhere.
She was a bit disappointed that he hadn't come to greet her arrival
but then he probably had his reasons. She shrugged it off and walked
beside Lady Felyna. "It's such a beautiful day here," she smiled.
Corowal waited with his children. He let the Felyna do the first
greeting, she would be Felyna's responsibility after all. It was
Lady's duty to oversee the high ranking, unmarried young women.
He step forward now. "Welcome to Emerald Falls hold, Lady Arippa." He
gave a bow and and gestured his children, who bowed or curtsied, each
in his or her own way or skill. "These are Ofewal, Corolia, Felcoron
and Wallia." He introduced the children. Wallia was holding her
sisters hand, her blind eyes staring ahead unseeingly.
"Lord Corowal," Arippa acknowledged and sank into a graceful curtsy.
Then her smile broadened for the children. She gravely shook hands
with the boys and hugged the two girls. "It is very nice to meet you
all. Corofel sends his respects sir, and I have a letter for you." She
added with a small smile indicating her luggage which was being
unloaded. It had taken the young man what seemed like hours to compose
before he had presented it to her to carry to his father.
"Lovely, we're all expecting eagerly to read it," Corowal replied with
a smile. "He's fine, I presume?"
Unnoticed by anyone, Wallia slipped her hand out of her sister's and
wandered off. She had her walking stick, which she still mostly used
to whack her brothers. She wandered aimlessly until she bumped into
something big. She reached out with her hand, running it along the
obstacle. It was warm and smooth. The line between toe and claw seemed
to fascinate her particulary.
Seeing what his smaller cousin was doing, Sarban sighed and scooted
around to get to Wallia. "Wallia, you have to ask a dragon permission
first before you go about touching it," the man said quietly knowing
she heard every word very clearly despite that. He put his hand on her
shoulder to give her a guide.
"Sarban!" Wallia warbled towards the familiar voice. "Biggie!" she
actually poked the dragon's toe with her stick.
"Oh, that's wonderful Arippa! Thank you for bringing it. " She had been
quiet, letting the young girl greet the children and Corowal. One of
her eyes went around to Wallia, but she noticed Sarban had her in hand
for the moment. She smiled at Corowal over the rest of the other
children, then turned to their new resident. "Let's get inside and
have some refreshments while your baggage is handled. It's about time
for a snack for the children as well." Her smile was there, warm and
welcoming.
Arippa returned Lady Felyna's warm smile and into the entry. It seemed
like an age since she'd last eaten. "Oh that sounds wonderful."
Tavia had watched the approach of the little girl with a mixture of
pleasure and regret. The heart of the new mother went out to the tiny
blind child at the same time she wanted to pick her up and hug her.
She chuckled as Sawauth lowered her head to inspect the small one.
She'd been introduced to other children before but this was the first
one who'd poked her with a little stick.
Sawauth woofed as small puff of air at the girl with an air of humor
and Tavia laughed. "She says to let her know if you want a ride. She
likes children." Tavia grinned at the Steward.
As the Holders turned away she nodded to S'benn and they began pulling
the young Lady's luggage for the workers to carry away.
Watching the green carefully, the steward listened to the rider while trying
to prevent Wallia from doing actual harm. "I'm sure that would be great,
though I don't know how Wallia would react to it..." He tried to imagine how
the girl would feel when all she'd know was the hide beneath her and the wind.
It wasn't like she'd realize how high they were or see the sights as they went
by. "You'd have to ask Lord Corowal's permission, however."
He bent down slightly and pulled her back some. "Wallia, everyone is going
inside for snack. Aren't you hungry?"
The greenrider simply nodded and smiled at the Steward.
"Food, yes. Pick me up" the little girl just held out her hands to Sarban to carry her in. Corowal ushered the older children in side and glanced backwards, trusting Sarban to look after little Wallia.
