Description: Taren and P'nal get to know each other.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 6 of Turn 6
"Hello, wingsecond. When did you last have your check up?" Taren asked,
trotting to catch up with the brownrider.
P'nal turned around and looked down at the shorter healer. The big
brownrider usually towered over most others, so it wasn't unusual for him
to be looking down to speak. "Ah...checkup for what?" He didn't stop
walking, though, since he'd been on his way to see about a wingrider he'd
heard was causing a disruption.
"For health, of course," Taren replied with a roll of his eyes.
He stopped then and saw the knots and realized who he'd been talking to.
"You're the new Weyrhealer." The way he said it was a statement of fact,
not a question.
"And you're G'nir's wingsecond, who is few months late from his annual,"
Taren retorted and waived a hide-record in front of the brownrider's face.
Sighing mightily, P'nal thought this man looked a bit like a male wherry,
all puffed up. "Aye well, I've no time to do it now. Tomorrow maybe."
Taren arched his eyebrows. "You want me to follow you around that whole
time?" He grinned impishly. Of course he had better things to do than hunt
elusive riders.
"Uhh...you're more than welcome to, but something tells me you probably
have plenty to do." Seeing the look on the man's face, he got the joke,
though and remembered his manners. Putting a hand out, even though the man
obviously knew who he was, he started introductions. "I'm P'nal, brown
Jodeth, Wingsecond of Weyrleader's wing."
"I'm Taren, master surgeon and Weyrhealer. I was starting to worry that you
have no sense of humor," Taren replied and shook the hand.
"I have one, it just doesn't come out much when I'm doing rounds. Hard to
see all the riders laid up or injured and still be lighthearted. Course,
you see more than me so how do you do it?" P'nal wasn't as outgoing as
some. His sense of humor was more subtle.
"It's the balancing force for all the stuff I see when working. Without it,
I would crack my shell," Taren replied. Everyone had a own way to deal with
things.
"That's probably true. So how are things going so far?" The man hadn't been
around long, he knew. He wondered if he was liking Dragonsfall or not. The
climate would be a big difference, for sure. "Where was it that you came
from?"
"I'm still getting to know the place and the people. Windswept Island weyr.
A sunny, tropical island middle of the ocean," Taren replied and sounded
wistful. Did he miss it? Yes. Did he miss his late weyrmate? Even more.
That's why he had left. Too many painful memories.
"Ah, getting along in the cold allright?" P'nal didn't think he really knew
anyone from there that he could recall.
"Not really, no. So I stick to indoors," Taren grimaced.
"Mmmm...I still craft in my spare time sometimes. Maybe I can fashion you
up a jacket for a trade." Getting favors from a healer was useful,
especially when you were a dragonrider.
"I could take you up to that trade," Taren said. "I don't have much to
exchange though."
"Needlethorns are always useful, as well as other things. Let me, though,
and I'll get your measure." A quick mental conference with Jodeth revealed
the wingrider had settled down without his interference. **Good**
"Oh, yes, you use them to sew clothes. I generally use them to stich up you
people," Taren said.
"Aye. An item with multiple purposes is generally of more use to anyone
than an item with one." It almost sounded like he was repeating that from
memory. And maybe he was.
"Isn't that stating the obvious?" the healer asked.
"I had a master who used to tell me that. Was part of teaching me to
multitask. If I could do more than one thing at a time I was more useful
than a man that couldn't." Some tasks required focus however.
"Funny, my master always told me how important it was to concentrate just
to the one task at hand. But then, in my craft, if my knife slips, the
patient dies. You, you just wasted a piece of hide or cloth."
"Well it's more that...while you're working on the current piece you better
have the next hide curing and another one skinned and ready to cure or you
can't continue once you're finished. There are a lot of steps to tanning."
Indeed, it was part of why he liked it. P'nal was a process-oriented man.
"Healing is more linear," Taren observed. "Different crafts, different
approaches."
"Aye that's probably true. Seems like it would need to be anyway." Smiling,
P'nal remembered what he had come to do in the first place. "It was good to
meet you but I got to get going. Even if he's calmed down, I still need to
check in. I'll come in."
"We'll see around, no doubt. And don't forget that check up. I didn't joke
when I said you're late from one," Taren replied.
"Aye Weyrhealer! Can't be a bad example to the others. I'll be there!"
Turning, he began to head down the tunnel again, long legs eating up the
distance with good speed.
