position

"My duty to you, Weyrwoman," Taren greeted when he entered the
Weyrwoman's office. His eyes fell on her and studied her. **Shards,
she's a redhead. Why she had to be red head? ** He just couldn't resist
redheads. They
were his weakness. He always fell in love with them. His weyrmate had
been redhead. That thought dulled some of the jovialily in his expression.
On
his shoulder, Aes crooned comfortingly.
"Master Taren, you are most welcome to Dragonsfall," Hygalia smiled as
she rose and offered her hand. "Did you have a good journey?"
"An excellent one. Almost as fun as making master Telemon to blush,"
Taren replied with a big grin and took her hand, lifting it to his lips and
kissing it.
"You are acquainted with our former Weyrhealer?" the Weyrwoman asked
with a touch of surprise.
"We Weyrhealers tend to stay in touch and exchange information. And I've
met him personally once or twice too," Taren replied.
"And in that time you saw fit to make our Weyrhealer blush. I see you
have a devious streak about you, sir," she said, her smile taking away
the sting in her words. Most smart men, she had found, had some sort of
crafty side to them.
"Most certainly. I'm a terrible person and absolutely brilliant
surgeon," Taren replied without a hint of modesty.
Hygalia was unimpressed. "I certainly hope so, since you're to be our
Weyrhealer. All Weyrhealers aught to be brilliant at _something_."
Taren gave her an impish grin. "I can also be brilliantly annoying."
"Well, that is for your staff to deal with. I don't recommend annoying
a woman with a giant gold standing behind her." He had to know that she
was constantly surrounded with bronzeriders, so while he may prove
amusing, she was not so easily impressed by cocky charm.
"I'm weyrbred. I know when to tread carefully," Taren replied, this time
with more serious tone.
He wasn't all jolly-good-charmer. Actually, it was mostly a cover for
the dedicated healer beneath.
"I'm glad to hear that," she said, giving him a genuine smile. Just so
long as they both had that clear. "So, how are you and your daughter
settling into the Weyr?"
"As well as can be expected. I still need to find her a fostermother, so
she's staying with her grandparents untill then," Taren replied.
"I'm sure the Headwoman and her staff can recommend some suitable
candidates for you to look at." Hygalia usually left such matters to
them since they worked more closely with the foster mothers in the Weyr.
"How do you like your living arrangements?"
"I'm sure she'll find someone suitable," Taren said, not really worried
about it. These things just took their time and meanwhile Tarine was
taken good care by her grandparents. "The suite is quite luxurious," Taren
grinned. "Plenty of room and close enough for the infirmary."
"Good. We wouldn't want you living in anything less than comfort. You
will have a difficult job." Hygalia knew just how much they owed to a
Weyrhealer, the one charged with making sure her riders survived
horrific injuries when possible and patched up enough to return to their
important work of protecting Pern.
Taren nodded. "I try to keep a regular schedule as much as I can for my
daughter's sake, but emergencies don't come up when it's most convinient
for you."
"How very true." And how much more for a healer, when every moment of
every day held the potential for a medical emergency of one sort or
another. "Is there anything else that I can do to smooth your
transition, then?"
"What's the protocol? If I need help to calm down a dragon with an
injured rider?" Taren asked.
She nodded, knowing that the last thing a Healers needed, let alone the
Weyr, was a dragon on a savage rampage. "There are riders who are also
Healers trained to assist you in such cases. They will make themselves
known to you. And of course, any gold in the Weyr can easily take
control of the situation. Come first to me, and if I am not here, my
Second."
"Well, i should introduce myself to her then. Unless you're throwing me
out of the weyr straightaway?" Taren replied and said with a charming
smile.
"No, not straightaway," she said with a rather amused smile. "I'll try
to give you some warning before that day comes."
"Oh, good," Taren said. He rather liked her.
