He was not relishing this, not at all. Sarban didn't consider himself an
expert in dealing with dragons, much less their riders. Still, from time
to time he was forced to do so and this was one of those times. Corowal
had asked him to make sure the riders were treated well, but kept out
of sight. Sighing, he looked down at his tunic to make sure it was in order
then walked into the part of the Hold where he knew the greenrider
was supposed to be staying.
G'wen blinked his eyes and looked up from where he lay, to E'naer,
when there was a knock at their door. "Wonder who that is?" Maybe it
was someone with food? He was hungry and no one had come lately to
see if they were okay. In fact everyone seemed decidedly odd, almost
like they were a bit frightened of them.
"Let's find out," the older greenrider said and called out, "Please, get in."
The smaller greenrider sighed and cuddled close to E'naer, more than
happy to let him take the lead. Even though it felt selfish, G'wen
loved that he had stayed with him. He loved the man, and maybe this
was a sign that E'naer loved him back. Softly he kissed him on the
lips just as the door opened.
That was the sight Sarban saw and he immediately realized exactly why
it was necessary to keep these two away from the general public. He also
recognized G'wen, but the other man he didn't know. The other _older_
man.. His mind balked at trying to think about what was going on here and
he decided to just work with basics first as he shut the door behind him.
"Hello again greenrider. I've come to see how you are and to talk with you
about your stay here." The steward was trying his best not to look
uncomfortable, projecting his usual business-like, genial manner. He nodded to E'naer as well, though didn't ask after his name just yet.
"Steward," E'naer acknowledged the visitor and broke off the kiss. He
didn't want to make the man too uncomfortable. He didn't remove his
hands though.
G'wen raised an eyebrow at the man he recognized. Didn't it matter
what sort of person you were confronted with that at all times you
should be polite and ask for a name? Particularly if the man being
ignored was the same rank as yourself. G'wen could well imagine
J'darin's response if he had acted so coolly to another. Lifting
himself onto an elbow, he said, "this is Weyrlingmaster 3rd E'naer,"
the tone of his voice letting Sarban know he felt him rude.
"Welcome to Emerald Falls, dragonrider," Sarban acknowledged before
going back into his reason for coming in the first place since E'naer had
seen his nod. "G'wen, I want you to know that as long you're here, your
needs will be seen to. We will have your meals brought and if you need
anything, just let the healers or the drudges know when they come to check
on you."
"One thing I wanted to ask about, however-are your plans for your dragon's
care. It's my understanding that the Weyr provides certain supplies and I'm
sorry but...we're not sure what that is or if we have it and if you need it." He looked at E'naer then as well. If the man was a Weyrlingmaster then he would know.
"She just ate before we came here." G'wen sat up as he spoke. "She's not hungry
but we are."
Food was being brought so Sarban expected that soon. "I mean...don't
they have to be cleaned?" The expression on his face was clueless. He
really didn't know much about dragon hygiene-not at all.
"They do, but Master Miranek said I only had to stay here a little
while." G'wen had no intention of staying with these rude, unfriendly
people longer than he had to.
"That depends how dirty they become and when they were last bathed. An adult dragon usually bathes after a Fall or when she gets dirty. Eillispeth has been swimming and hunting, so she'll be fine for several days yet," E'naer's tone was more conciliatory. G'wen was a weyrbrat, he reminded himself. He didn't know hold rank the way E'naer did. In a hold, Lord holder was equal to Weyrleader and the Lord's steward was equal to a Weyrleader's second.
"They also take care of the feces themself, so you don't have to worry
about that part either," he continued his explanation. "We appreciate your
concern and hospitality, sir," he said, giving G'wen a little nudge to indicate he should watch his mouth more. Dragons usually didn't stay in holds for longer periods, just the few candlemarks it took to take part in a Gather, bring or fetch passengers, or stand in watch on the fire heights.
There was a knock on the door and Sarban turned to see about the interruption. The drudge had arrived with the food. He let her inside and talked while she went about her work, placing things from the tray to the table. "I understand." **They were only staying a few days at most then. Thank Faranth!** "This chamber has its own bathing facilities so you shouldn't have to go looking for those. You shouldn't be bothered either except for the healers and the food drudges."
His face changed somewhat after the drudge left. "I'll let you eat your meal now, but Emerald Falls is committed to seeing you recover and assisting you in doing so to help you get back to your duties. We offer our services to you and your dragons. Let the staff know if you need anything."
G'wen suppressed rolling his eyes, just wanting this prejudiced man
out of his space. His anger having spent what little energy his body
had, he curled back up on the bed and let E'naer deal with anything
else the Steward had. His head was pounding and all he wanted was to
go home.
"Thank you, we will," E'naer replied.
