K'ale

K'ale

He'd received the assignments for the weyrlings and saw the brownrider
on there. **Very good. He's smart and solid and hardworking** He knew
the boy belonged to D'ale and Kenza which was also helpful. He'd sent
a message to K'ale to let him know he wanted to see him. G'nir would
probably want to give his own welcome, but he did want to greet the
boy.

When the Wing assignments were announced K'ale didn't expect to be
assigned to Cyan. He knew the way things worked and with both his
parents in that wing they would put him somewhere else. What he
_didn't_ expect was the Weyrleader's wing!

It made him pump his fist with a "Yes!" when he heard the news. It
wasn't much later that he got the call through Imalkyth to report to
the Wingsecond. He tapped on the open door frame and entered P'nal's
office with a smile. "You wanted to see me sir?"

"Aye just wanted to say welcome. G'nir will probably set up a more formal
meeting to give you your marching orders but I thought it would be good to
see you." The brownrider gestured for him to sit. "So how have things been
since our last conversation?"

"Thank you," he said to the greeting. Seating himself at P'nal's
invitation, he tightened his lips briefly. "I'm doing just fine." He
couldn't say the same for his friend Cardella who had all but
disappeared from any kind of social activity. He shrugged. "We just
want to kill Thread," he spoke for he and his lifemate.

"Have you met any of your other wingmates yet?" He knew the weyrlings
sometimes met some of the older riders before they graduated and it would
be good to know which of them he could maybe set to watch K'ale.

"I know a few," he said. "Cardella of course. T'bel." His friend's
fathers' weyrmate had been helpful to them all during their
weyrlinghood. "I've met a few others... mmm Sh'lua."

Sh'lua would have his hands full with S'vin, so T'bel seemed like a
possible choice. He had connections to the weyrlings and he was
usually good at putting people at ease.

"I'm probably more familiar with the Cyan riders because of my
parents." He smiled and shrugged.

"Right well I might have an idea, we'll see. You have your knots. Drill
schedule's here." He handed it over. "G'nir will probably want to see
you. I would like to know, though, what are your strengths and weaknesses?"

K'ale's eyes opened a little at the question. "Well sir, I still have
some troubles with night drills. It's getting better though and I'm
working on it."

"I would hope so since soon you'll be flying night thread. Are you not
ready to fly, K'ale?" That was a serious concern.

"I'm ready," he said emphatically. "You asked a question and I
answered honestly. I have difficulty but that doesn't mean I can't do
it... I can." }:We can:{ **Yes that's right** "We can."

"Well what's your difficulty?" he asked with some concern, wondering
why it was still a problem.

Honestly at this point he was much better than he had been at first
and he was sorry he'd even mentioned it. "I've worked extensively with
T'mahl and we're able to make a lot of progress." He knew that was the
whole purpose of weyrling training. If he wasn't ready for the wings
they would have held him back and he knew it. "It was just a trust
issue. I have learned to just let Imalkyth take the lead and trust his
senses over my own."

"And use the flame to see by. It's not the best, but at least you can make
do when there's not much moonlight." P'nal didn't prefer fighting thread
at night, but it happened.

"Yes sir," he answered. "It is much easier when the dragons are flaming."

"If that's your weakness, what are you good at?" the brownrider asked him,
wondering what the answer would be.

K'ale wasn't made up like some of the bronze riders who seemed to have
to brag all the time about how good they were at this or that and
truthfully he didn't really know what to say. "I don't know really," he started.
"But we seem to be aware of where everyone else is around us all the time."

"We can work with that," he said as he mulled it over. P'nal added it to his
notes. The brownrider scratched his chin and leaned back in his seat. "I suppose
that's really all I have for today. You should have what you need. Did you want
to know anything?"

"No sir," K'ale smiled. "I figure what I need to know will be covered
in drills and wing meetings." He knew he could ask questions and they'd

be watching him anyway. He was excited to get started now that he'd
actually graduated to a fighting wing.
