He'd heard about the boy who had been told he couldn't Stand. Apparently they had been giving the lad drudge chores. P'nal was in need of someone who could run errands for him and assist with things and he thought the boy might just work out. After all, he came from runner stock apparently. So he told the headwoman to send Jessmyr to his office.
Jessmyr knocked on the office door, wondering what it was about. What would a Wingsecond want with him? He wasn't even a candidate, he had nothing to do with dragonriders, unless he was serving them. "Sir, I'm Jessmyr. You called me?"
"Aye come in please." P'nal was sitting down and remained so. The brownrider watched, waiting for the boy's entrance.
"Yes, sir," Jessmyr replied and came to stand before the desk. He was a lean, frail looking boy with pale skin.
**Not very impressive. Still, he might be useful** "Tell me Jessmyr, can you read and figure?"
"Yes, I can," Jess replied. He had had the basic harper lessons.
That was a start anyway. "And what do you do all day now?" He wondered if the boy had decided to craft. He could be a harper, a tanner, anything.
"Whatever the headwoman tells me to do. I help the infirm riders a lot. Bring their meals, collect their laundry, read to them, help them wash dragons, all kind of stuff," Jessmyr replied.
"I'm sure they're thankful for the help. What if I asked you to help me with some things. Do you think you have time with that or does the headwoman have too much for you to do?" He'd hate to drag the lad away from important things.
"Depends on what kind of duties they are," Jessmyr replied. "I'm not allowed to work too much, so she has to keep my duties light. A health issue, you see," he ducked his head and stared his toes.
"Hmm...I was thinking of running messages, light cleaning, and a lot of filing, actually." He saw the look down and wondered at it. The boy had shame.
"I can do that, if it isn't physically demanding," Im're replied.
"Not really, just time consuming," he said honestly. It would be one less chore he would have to do.
"Then it's not a problem," Jessmyr replied.
"Good. See the Headwoman then and I'll ask for about three candlemarks per day. Does that sound fair?" He hoped it would since he was thinking the boy probably couldn't do too much to help her if he was unable to do so much.
"Yes, sir," Jessmyr replied, "It does sound fair."
"Very well. Report here tomorrow afternoon." That would give him time to tend to Jodeth, attend the wing meeting, and do his own exercises.
"At which candlemark, sir?" Jessmyr asked. Afternoon was bit too vague for him, after all it started from noon and went all the way to the evening.
"After the thirteenth," he answered, thinking about his duties and what else he needed to do. It was time to air out his bedfurs, he was almost sure.
"I'll be there," Jessmyr promised.
