When the wing meeting was over, he'd gone directly to see one of his
wingriders who was having problems.
P'nal ordered him to a healer, thinking it was better to be safe than
sorry. Walking out of the man's weyr, the
brownrider headed into the Lower Caverns, intending on procuring
something to enjoy later when he was alone and relaxing.
T'mahl had been walking down the corridor and took a quick step to the
side as someone exited one of the weyr doors. Glancing over more out of
reflex than curiosity, he noticed it was a brownrider he knew. "P'nal?
This isn't your weyr, is it?"
Hearing someone call his name, he turned to see T'mahl. Relaxing upon
recognition of the man, he shook his head. "No, had to come check on
K'rune. Been real tired lately and wouldn't listen so I ordered him to
the healers." Safety was paramount.
"Some people just don't know what's good for them," T'mahl agreed,
having run into that problem many times before. "I'm sure it's not too
serious, though. Maybe just a bit of Thread-fatigue?"
"Yeah or insomnia. Surprisingly enough sometimes after a bad fall, a lot
of guys just can't sleep." He had seen it many times and likely T'mahl
had too. "So how's it going with the weyrlings? I know there's a class
coming up now."
"Well, so far. No major issues, but the worst is yet to come, as they
say." T'mahl was still thinking about P'nal's earlier comment. He knew
all too well just how hard sleep could come after a bad Fall. Even
Turns later. "I think we have a good crew of assistants and staff, so I
think this will be a good crop," he added, coming back to the present
conversation.
"I want to ask you something." He frowned, thinking about what he was
going to say. "Have you noticed anything with J'darin lately?"
"Well, a bit tired, and bit drained, but who could blame him, going from
one troubled class to a brand new one? Weyrlingmaster is no easy job."
Though one who was once Weyrleader shouldn't find it quite so hard.
"No it isn't certainly. We had a talk recently and I'm hoping it'll get
better. If you notice anything, though, let me know?" He was speaking
with the voice of a concerned friend.
"Anything such as what exactly?" T'mahl asked, rather curious just what
P'nal was implying.
"He's been drinking a bit much lately and it was starting to effect
things. He says he's going to cut back. I'm hoping it'll help to bring
him out of his slump." Scratching his head, he didn't know what else to
do about
his friend. That would be a start.
"Oh, shards," T'mahl muttered, shaking his head. "That's what did in
our _last_ Weyrlingmaster. I did _not_ make J'darin Weyrlingmaster so
he could go down the same sharding road."
"I think he'll be okay. He just needs some support." He had to trust
that he wasn't too far gone. "I think he's getting too emotional with
the kids
and then he drowns it with the alcohol. So he's got to take a step
back."
"Well, yes. This is how it starts." T'mahl would _definitely_ be
keeping a closer eye on J'darin now. "Perhaps he needs some time off as
well." A break, as it were.
P'nal was of the mind that J'darin deserved a chance to correct his
problem first. Then, if he couldn't, they'd step in as needed. "I want
to give
him the chance first. If it doesn't work, then I'll let G'nir know
before
I'll allow the children to be put in harm's way."
"I just might know it before you do." After all, T'mahl saw J'darin
with the weyrlings on a daily basis.
"Aye, that's why I'm asking you to watch him T'mahl." He hoped the
other rider wouldn't turn this into a fullscale intervention forced on
J'darin. Shells, he'd never forgive him.
T'mahl's main concern was the weyrlings, and he would take the steps
necessary to protect them should the need arise. He was, however, just
going to keep an eye on the situation. For the time being. "Well,
thank you for letting me know."
"Aye." He put his hand out to give T'mahl a parting shake. P'nal had
dealt with K'rune, but he had other matters on his mind.
