Jaylene

Jaylene

The brownrider had come to the Hatching to back G'nir up more than anything. P'nal liked to see the eggs hatch, even if they weren't dragonets for his Weyr. Hatchings were always happy and special. So there he was standing at River Bluff, thinking about his next move as the dance floor began to fill up.

"You gonna just stand there or are you going to ask me to dance?"

His head turned and he saw the greenrider. She was taller, though he still came higher than she did. Her hair was down and he couldn't help but admire
her figure. She had River Bluff knots. "Sorry for taking so long," he replied before putting an arm out.

"Well I'm sure you'll know just how to make it up then," she teased as
she leaned into his arms and let him take the lead in a fast waltz.

"Just getting started," he soothed as he led her around the floor. His callused hands circled her waist as his boots hit the floor.

"I'm sure you can," she teased. He danced like a dream, this one did.

"So you're from here. Anyone on the sands you know?" P'nal wasn't the greatest at smalltalk, but he made the attempt.

"Quite a few. And some even Impressed, including one of my best
friends' little boy." Jaylene dipped when he leaned her back, her
long hair bouncing. "And you? What brings you all the way over
here?"

"The food really, but usually to make sure my Weyrleader has someone
behind him. Wingsecond's job you know." It wasn't so hard most of the time
at public functions.

"Ahh...so your G'nir's right hand man." The song ended and she
stopped to applause the band before grabbing a couple glasses of
sparkling wine from passing kitchen help and handing him one.

He took it, moving away from the dance floor. "Aye, I'm his Wingsecond."

"You enjoying the break from blizzards then, are you?" She led him to
the table she and her brothers were using as a resting spot. "I was
there a few times, visiting friends. It's so cold! I don't know how
you guys can stand it."

"Well you get used to it. Then again, I'm a tanner so my weyr is covered
in enough hides and fur, that you don't really notice." P'nal shrugged, knowing most days it made him smell like dead flesh.

"Until you leave your weyr, that is..." She gave him a wink.

"True, but we don't dress light, either." No, in his flight leathers,
P'nal looked very different from her.

"Only the foolish ones, eh?"

"Indeed. I mean if you want your extremities frozen off, it's a good way to go." The brownrider smiled as if he'd seen it happen before a time or two, which indeed he had.

"I dunno.." She paused and took a sip of wine. "It wouldn't sound very
quick to me. More like slow and painful. And rather embarrassing.
Nah, I'd rather go quick...a drowning or Threadscore...something
dramatic."

"Even though it's not usual for riders, I hope I die in my bed and Jodeth goes with me." Sensing what a morbid turn this conversation had taken, he
took a drink himself and looked over the crowd. "So, how's your Weyr doing? You got a new Weyrwoman the same time we did."

"Yeah we did." Her voice took on a dark tone. "How's your's?" She
still hadn't forgiven Rhosyn for her behavior with Jayonne.

"Hygalia is allright. Of course Dragonsfall sort of runs itself I think cause we folk sort of just stay most of the time. We've got a good junior weyrwoman too so it helps." P'nal was proud of Teseada, in some ways seeing her as a niece for how many turns he knew D'nev.

"Onnyth is a beautiful little queen. Very lovely." Jaylene nodded her head thoughtfully, thinking of the young gold and her delicate features.
She'd always had a soft spot for smaller than the normal dragons.

}:That's good,:{ her tiny green quipped.

"Aye, we're fond of her, of course." Then again, it didn't escape P'nal's attention that River Bluff's senior queen practically dwarfed every other.

"So we can't get you to swap her over for one of our's then?" Jaylene
grinned to let him know she was teasing.

"Don't see it happening, no. Course yours seems to rise more often than the others..." He acted as if he were considering it.

"Yeah, she does. Not that the boys are complaining!" Jaylene shrugged
her shoulders and took another sip of her wine. And thanked Faranth
Reanth had found her and not some giant thing like a gold.

P'nal saw someone heading for the greenrider and he finished his glass.
"It looks as if you're wanted. It was great dancing with you though." Out
of the corner of his eye, he saw G'nir nodding and he knew he had to go
see about something.

Jaylene turned in time to see J'zen coming her way. "That's one of my baby brothers. He probably has yet another cute boy to show off to me...he's like that, a little boy magnet." She gave her hand to the brownrider to say good-bye.

He took it and lingered for a bit, then smiled before heading off to join
his Weyrleader. "Boys are not men. Then again, I think you know that."
