He waited in his Wingleader's office, ready for their daily meeting. P'nal
had his list of discussion items ready and he knew G'nir would be in as soon as he got done with his morning duties. He didn't care to wait anyway.
"P'nal, what have we today?" G'nir strode in with hurried steps and dropped
an armful of hides onto his desk. Pulling out his chair, he took his place. He wasn't in a good mood. He had tried to convince the Weyrhealer to pull off his resignation but Telemon remained stubborn. Luckily, finding the replacement was turning out to be difficult and Telemon wouldn't leave them without someone taking his place.
"Well, the usual mostly. I did have one thing to ask, though, before we get into the nitty gritty stuff." He shuffled to his little speech he'd written. "So I was speaking with the Weyrwoman's Second the other day. We've been talking about how we could improve drills. So, we thought if perhaps one of the junior golds flew below us during drills every great now and again, it might help."
"The dragons would work harder to keep them safe and to impress them and we
might get more effort out of them. It would also mean more practice for the queens' wing in different fall situations and scenarios." His eyes followed G'nir's face to see what he thought.
G'nir frowned. "Sounds like begging trouble. The bronzes especially would be too interested in making an impression on her and would be distracted from the drill."
"To me, it would be as near to a fall situation as we can get them. In fall, they will have queens under them. It will also allow us to practice things like rescue catches, which will usually take a bronze or a gold to do. In fall, they know they're there, but they have to keep their minds on their jobs. Why not teach them that sort of focus in drills as well?" He'd already thought it out from so many angles. If Hygalia didn't go for it, though, it didn't matter.
"I don't know," G'nir drummed the table top with his fingers while he thought about it.
"I say try it out for a little bit. If it doesn't work, then oh well. We've got to find a way to make them better though." He shrugged, leaving the decision up to his Wingleader.
"I still think that a gold in a drill is too distracting," G'nir wasn't convinced.
"It'd be the same as the drills we do with all the wings, just a little smaller. Those always go well, don't they?" P'nal actually liked those, though he understood why they couldn't do them that often.
"Well, yes. With all the wings competing which one does best performance," G'nir replied.
"We have to do something to get them better and right now I just think this might be the trick." With that, he really was done trying to defend his point.
"Well, we can try it out once to see how it turns out," G'nir said. He still thought it would not go well. There was no harm in trying however.
"Allright then I'll leave it to you to make arrangements with the Weyrwoman and let me know. Here's W'ser's report about who's coming back and who's still out." He handed over the hide, knowing the numbers were better than before. The colder weather helped with fall injuries since
they flew less falls.
"Anything special there?" G'nir asked and started to read the report.
"Just Drila, she finally had the baby and got herself healed up." P'nal understood the need for Weyrbred candidates to Stand, but he wished that greenriders weren't responsible for that many of them. It forced the wing to fly light during certain times of the turn.
"Right, so she's returning to duties. We'll put her back to her old position." G'nir said and scribbled a note.
"Still looking for a proper wingthird of course. We need to make sure that's the perfect person, whoever it may be." The brownrider checked his list off, knowing the rest G'nir would read up on himself.
"Yes, we can't rush into anything with that," G'nir sighed. Still, being without a wingthird was cumbersome.
