When the dragon's humming began, Jayonne looked up, blurry eyed, at
his table guest. It was a bit earlier than he thought, with some
regret. J'zen had gotten the time right, so he and Jaylene would owe
him a few marks. He looked around for his brother before remembering
that he had a particularly good looking and well muscled bluerider in
his weyr. They wouldn't see him for days.
"You ready for this?" he asked P'veas.
"I think so," came the response as the humming began in earnest.
"Well, you'd better be." The younger man stood up and took P'veas by
the shoulder.
"I hope he impresses," P'veas said.
"Oh, he will!" Jaylene pounced up on her old friend's shoulders and
hugged him. "Come on, let's get you in there to see his little green
first hand!"
"To the stands then?"
"After you, my dear." She held out her arm to escort him to the
seats, Jayonne trailing behind.
P'veas took her arm, suddenly grateful for the support. What would happen if Pastrah was left behind. He was pretty sure that it would just about break the small amount of confidence that he'd managed to build up since arriving at the Weyr.
"Oh look, some of the eggs are close to hatching now! Where are the
candidates?" She craned her neck around to look for them as the three
of them sat down close to the eggs..
"Here they come." Jayonne pointed in the direction of the opening
where a long line of white robed--and white faced--candidates were.
Amount them, looking terrified, was little Pastrah.
"Awww....it's like looking at mini P'veas," Jaylene exclaimed, giving
her best friend a squeeze.
"He looks so small."
"That's because he_is_small," Jayonne quipped. He for one, was never
happy seeing such youngsters Standing. What was the point? They
needed riders ready to go in 6 months time, not ones that couldn't fly
a Fall for another four turns. And what about the ones that--like
this boy--were expected to Impress green? He shuddered, thinking of
such a young child being forced to deal with a Flight.
"The hatchlings could be bigger than him," P'veas heard someone behind him
whisper. "At least, if he does impress, he'll not have to deal with flights for a while." Young riders of dragons didn't rise or chase, with the greens it was like they knew their rider was not old enough to cope, and for others well the Weyrwoman's gold gave them a lecture they couldn't ignore, which inhibited them from chasing.
At that moment, one of the eggs split, revealing a little draonet
inside. "Oh, look!" Jaylene grabbed P'veas' arm in a painful grip,
all but willing the dragonet to Pastrah.
"I don't think that one's for him." The blue found his match. "Look,"
another egg cracked, and a bronze inched his way onto the sands.
The brother and sister pair held their breath until the bronze went to
another boy. "Ah, to bad, that's a pretty one," Jayonne said, patting
P'veas on the shoulder.
"What about him?" P'veas pointed to a brown dragon, clearly looking around
to find his lifemate.
"He's..nice." Jaylene sighed when the brown went with another
lifemate close to Pastrah. He had been so close!
"How about him?" Jayonne asked, pointing to a particularly small
brown. His hide likewise was quite different, being much darker than
his clutchmates. "Isn't he a pretty one? Almost dainty enough to be
a green."
"I like the look of him," P'veas said as the brown gazed out at the boys on the sands. The dragon tentatively took a step in the direction of Pastrah. "Is he? Is that Pastrah's dragon?"
"And...and..." Jaylene sat forward, all but mentally pushing the
little one to Pastrah.
The brown looked confused as he glanced about. The queen looked his
way and then he cried out and Pastrah rushed to him. }:The little one
is Wenarth,:{ Reanth told all three sitting.
"A brown?" P'veas couldn't keep the note of surprise out of his voice.
"Well, he's either that or a funny shade of green. Congrats!"
Jayonne leaned over and gave P'veas a clap on the back. "Your boy is
now officially a dragonrider!"
"So he is," P'veas looked down again, seeing the look of joy on his son's
face as he stared into the eyes of his brown.
