G'nir was in a foul mood. He pretty much threw his flight gear into a corner. "How did that happen? How did we lose two riders at once and our Wingthird too!"
"The young rider was an idiot. Unfortunately, he took M'non with him." P'nal sighed, wishing it wasn't true, but there it was. The brownrider put a hand to his forehead.
G'nir grunted and went for his bar cabinet. "Did you see what happened? I wasn't able to follow everything?" he asked. He lifted a bottle of whiskey and showed it to his Second, with a question on his face.
"Here's what I know. It was a shitty fall because of the wind. Ianth was all over the place, not holding his position. And then, he was scored." Frowning, P'nal didn't want to say the next part but he had to. "And then, instead of calling in a larger dragon to handle it-Fanth and Jarith tried to catch the brown themselves. Jarith and Ianth got tangled up in the process. I told the blue to go between as it was to lose him but he didn't listen. Then, the brown went between and the blue didn't come back." P'nal waved away the bottle, knowing J'darin would be expecting him to sit with him later.
"Sharding mess," G'nir grumbled. He poured himself a drink. "And now we need a new wing third."
"Quite true. I tell you what, though, tomorrow they are going to have the heroics beaten out of them. We will run suicides until everyone drops. No more of this I'll save you nonsense. We keep losing two riders instead of one with that." P'nal sighed.
G'nir didn't quite agree with his Second. There was a part of him that the heroics like that appealed to. But he just drained the glass in one go and pressed the empty glass against his forehead. "You would think that an experienced blue like Jarith would have noticed that the brown was already gone," he sighed. "How on Pern are we going to replace M'non? He had more experience as a wing third than anyone else in this Weyr."
"He had to gain that experience somehow. Someone should be able to do the job, to learn." P'nal thought about it, not sure he wanted to put any names forth. Let G'nir come up with it on his own.
"The learning process can be long," G'nir growled unhappily.
"Aye well, thankfully we have several older riders that have plenty of fall experience, know the wing, and the formations. Not like the beginning of the Pass when so many were lost." **Find the good part**
"I have to look through them and see who would fit in best as a wingthird," G'nir sighed. He went to shelf and pulled out files of the two deceased rider. "Meanwhile, I have to notify the next of kin. Sometimes I wish I could just the truth instead of flowery commiserations. Your son was a fumbling idiot who took a good man with him to death," he said sarcastically
"Quite true. Honestly, it was probably a matter of time. Just wish it hadn't happened like it did." There it was.
"Anything like this should not be happening," G'nir said.
"No it shouldn't, but that's the nature of threadfall. Looking at the records, even in a good Pass they lost plenty of dragons. Inevitably, someone will feck up. We just have to minimalize that as much as we can." P'nal was a brown-a pragmatist. He accepted casualties as a fact of life.
"Yeah, it's inevitable," G'nir said with a resigned sigh and pushed that matter out of his mind. They couldn't change what had happened, they could only deal with consequences. "Did the dragon healers say how badly Fanth was injured?"
"She'll be out for a bit, but it's not that bad really." In the scheme of things, it was a minor injury.
"At least that's positive," G'nir said.
"Allright I'll make up a list and you can think about it tomorrow. Right now I think we all just need to recover." They couldn't think straight after seeing that and P'nal knew it. A rash decision wouldn't help anyone.
G'nir nodded. "We need to choose the new Wingthrid carefully. I want someone who can fit into our team seamlessly."
"Yes sir, it'll be an important decision for sure." P'nal knew it could make or break their wing in the long run.
