The tiny greenrider sat down harder than her small frame would have
indicated she would have. Shaking her cropped blond hair, she gave
the brownrider at the table a sheepish grin and said, "How have you
been keeping yourself, P'nal?"
He looked up and saw her. A look of suspicion passed his eyes, but it
went over quickly. "Busy. Leading the Wing and keeping myself straight.
You?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "Just trying to keep a low profile from
my mother. She's getting a bit....'crazy'...with this hatching coming
up. If Catrien doesn't Impress this time I think she's gonna go
mental." It was no secret that her mother--a proud wingthird--expected
her daughters to follow in her footsteps. And for the youngest that
meant Impressing. She would tolerate no excuses.
"Sometimes we have to wait," he said simply. Not everyone met their
dragon on their first try. Weyrbred people knew that better than others.
"I think everyone gets that way when a hatching comes though. Me, I
don't have to worry about my kids since no one told me if I had any."
"Ha!" Larbella laughed at that. "I'm pretty sure we_could_find your
children, if you really wanted to. It's not like your complexion is
too terribly common." She leaned forward to give him a flirty look.
He was a cutie!
"Well no but there are some...and some of them might not be Weyrbred
anyway. I'm not worried about it." He shrugged, the typical dragonrider
who couldn't raise his kids anyway.
"Oh? You been pouching through some of the Holder ladies?" She
perked up at that thought.
"There have been Gathers here and there. Never said they were all ladies
though." He shrugged, watching her. She was on a fishing expedition and he
recognized that.
"Very few of them actually are," she commented dryly, sharing her
mother's opinion of Holder folk.
"Ah now, I wouldn't say that. It's just the ones that are don't waste time
with us rogue riders who will use them and leave them." P'nal sort of liked
having a bad reputation.
"Nah, I guess the girls are okay...ish" She rather didn't like many
Holder women with their snotty attitudes towards female greenriders.
"I try to stay away from gathers to be honest. All those Holder
men...all they want to do is paw at you." She shuddered at the memory
of her last gather.
"Oh?" He frowned, not thinking that was acceptable at all. "If you ever
want to go, I'll go with you."
"Really? That'd be nice." She grinned and slid her hand up one well
muscled arm coltishly.
"That way, I can beat them all off, you know." He nodded, posturing in
an exaggerated fashion.
"I'll be more than happy to cheer you on!" She kept her hand on his
arm, enjoying the feeling of his muscles at work.
"You probably have to beat them off yourself, around here, I imagine."
He grinned good-naturedly at the greenrider.
"Nah, everyone knows my mum. If anyone dares mess about with me or
Cat then the guy'll know that she would be on to him. One good thing
about having a ballbuster for a mother." She gave P'nal's arm one
last pat.
"You have to grow up sometime, though. And a wingthird can't hurt a
wingsecond." His head had started to turn, thinking about it himself.
"I'm done eating. You want to go for a walk eh?" It was her chance to
make good on what she had sort of offered. If she didn't want to, all she
had to do was say no.
"I'd love to."
