There was nothing wrong with the food. Nothing at all. It was perfectly
good food, a perfectly fine recipe, and under normal circumstances, Kaya
would have been eating as readily as anyone else at the hold. But that
night, her fork was in her hands, but it did not make a steady path
from plate to mouth and back again. Instead it swerved and swirled
through the mashed tubers, mixing it with the corn. The meat remained
completely untouched, not a single bite taken from the flesh. She
did, at least, sip slowly at her wine, though that was reserved
compared to earlier meals.
Wirnan had been watching her since they'd sat down to eat. Something was
clearly wrong, she'd hardly touched any of the food on her plate,
whereas he'd almost eaten it all already. A frown creased his forehead
as he noted her pushing her food around her plate. Reaching out a hand
he placed it over hers to draw her attention.
"Is everything alright, Kaya? You don't seem yourself."
Kaya pulled her hand away, unwilling to let his hold on her linger. She
hadn't allowed him to touch her much since...since. Shards, every time
he did it was nerve-wracking. It brought her thoughts back to...no, she
didn't need to think about _that_. "I'm fine." She muttered, though
clearly it was not the case. She attempted to take a bite, but doing
so only brought out the fact that she'd hardly taken in anything. Even
the wine didn't seem to whet her appetite.
He gritted his teeth at her reaction. "Fine, I'm sorry I even bothered
to ask," he grumbled, tucking back into his own food and doing his best
to ignore her completely.
At least he didn't push. Kaya sighed and reached up to rub at her brow.
She had a headache as well and was finding herself a bit sore...though
she wasn't going to tell Wirnan about that, or _where_! "I'm tired."
She muttered pushing herself to her feet. "I'm going to go lie down a
bit." Lunch just wasn't appetizing to her at all and the awkwardness
between them wasn't helping her feel any better. Not one bit.
He sighed when she rose. Things were not good between them again. Even
though she had consented that night, it was like she was now pulling
herself away from him and Wirnan was frustrated to no end. "Whatever
you want," he muttered, though he did watch her, uncertain if perhaps
there really _was_ something else going on. But, no, she was just being
the same moody person she'd become since the night of the storm. It
seemed that nothing he did had any effect on her. Pushing his own plate
away, he decided to take a walk.
Kaya barely acknowledged the man, just the slightest of nods before she
turned to head quickly out of the dining hall. She needed to get
away. Get some air. Lie down. Something. She didn't know how much
longer she was going to be able to do this. Shards, and how many
months until Spring? Til the caravan's came? Could she last that long?
It didn't matter. She had no choice. She was going to _have_ to!
