Description: Delria and Catrien have a private meeting with Onnyth, her eggs and Teseada
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 16 of Turn 6
Bone tired and cold, G'wen bent his head into the blowing snow and
walked ahead of the two girls he had promised to introduce to Teseada.
Glancing back to Delria and Catrien, he hoped they wouldn't forget
his advice and take advantage of the gold rider's kindness. What was
going to happen to her, he mused. This thing with the harper, he just
couldn't see how it was going to have a happy ending.
The three ducked into the hatching chamber and out of the deep snow.
After the blizzard there wasn't a spot that wasn't covered. Neath had
decided to stay back in her wallow, not wanting to face the weather.
And drills had been so hard today that G'wen wished he could join her.
Just before they rounded into the Sands proper, he turned to remind
the girls, "now be respectful and please, don't do or say anything
that may hurt Tes' feelings, okay?" He fixed them both with his dark
gaze.
Delria pulled a face that said she was appalled. "I would never. I'm
on my best behavior at the moment, thank you." As the hot sands came
into view, she undid her warm coat and pulled back her hood. "And with
me and you here, I'm sure we can keep Cat from getting into too much
trouble. Besides neither of us want to squander a chance like this."
Catrien rolled her eyes and grumbled at her two friends. they both
had been treated her with kid gloves this last sevenday or so, and
S'vin too. She wasn't going to fall apart if she didn't impress this
time, again. She was made of sterner stuff. But these two, with
their pretty eyes didn't seem to believe that and gave her sad puppy
dog looks whenever they thought she wasn't paying attention. Taking
off her coat and running her hand over her short blond hair, she
nodded to G'wen. That one, he was turning more and more into his
bossy green everyday. But she was impressed that Delria had
single handily conned him into doing this.
Wet and dripping, the three walked out onto the sands and to the
waiting queen, and her rider. Though Gennith was a beautiful gold,
Catrien had always preferred Onnyth. She was stunning with her pale
hide and her delicate looks. For a moment she wondered what it was
like, Impressing such a creature.
"G'wen," Teseada said by way of greeting. "Good to see you."
He smiled and hugged the gold rider before sitting down beside her and
introducing the two candidates. "This lovely lady is Delria, who you
might not know as she's only been here since the last Hatching, and
this obnoxious shorty is Catrien. You probably know her mother, she's
F'pen's wingthird." He grinned when Catrien protested over being
called short. But if there was anyone that he could tease about being
smaller than himself or even Cardella, it was Catrien who he was sure
wasn't even 5 feet.
She gave the girls a smile. "Nice to meet you." She glanced to Onnyth, who
seemed in a good mood. "Just behave yourselves around her, that's all I
ask."
Delria gave the goldrider a beaming smile. Her eyes flicked up to Onnyth as
well. She wondered for a moment if the dragon would even allow them near her
eggs. What if she got angry? Would she...do something drastic? The Candidate
felt a little color leave her face. "Pleasure to meet you as well. So what
would be the best way to carry on? I'll move where ever you tell me. I
certainly don't want to anger your queen. She has such a nice color about
her."
"Be gentle," Teseada advised her. "She says you can touch them, but be
careful."
Catrien looked at her and swallowed a bit. Despite knowing Onnyth was
a gentle gold she was still nervous. Well there was nothing for it,
if she wanted a green like G'wen she'd better just buck up and do it.
Taking Delria by the hand, she walked up to Onnyth and said, "thank
you for letting us touch your babies, we'll be gentle, I promise."
"Yes, we'll be very careful. Thank you for this honor, mother dragon,"
she curtsied as best she could on the sands. Delria squeezed the other
girl's hand as they began to enter the circle of eggs. "So, where do
we start? There's so many," she whispered.
"Uh...let's stick to the smaller ones. They should have greens in
them...I think." She tried to push out of her mind that S'vin's
little blue had come out of the smallest egg of the last hatching.
Letting Catrien's hands slip away from her own, Delria ventured off. She
figured since there were already a few eggs that had caught her eye she
would just start from the back and work her way forward. When she came up
to her first egg she froze. Remembering to breath, she took a deep breath
and then tentatively put out a hand. Slowly she lowered it onto the egg and
what she felt was relief as well as a little surprise. She had anticipated
it being warm, what with the hot sands and all, but she hadn't expected it
to feel so...alive.
Watching the girls, G'wen leaned his head on Teseada's shoulder.
"Thanks for letting them do this. Poor Cat...she's been at this for
five turns now." He struck him that his childhood friend and Teseada
had probably been candidates together.
"I'll work out for her in the end, I'm sure there will be a green for her
some day soon."
"I hope so."
The girl in question looked about her, feeling a bit confused as to
which one to focus on. There was that shinny one with the...or how
about that biggish one with the green swirl on it? Or perhaps that
tiny one that had..oh there were too many! She crouched down beside a
little one, sort of off to one side and sat beside it. Hopefully
Delria was having an easier time of it.
It would seem that Delria was having an easier time of things. She had moved
on to different eggs and was on her third visit. As she passed towards the
third egg, a medium sized one laying on it's side and almost hidden behind
two larger eggs, she made wary glances up at Onnyth and occasionally over to
G'wen and Teseada. When she arrived at the egg she put both hands on top of it,
almost kneeling in the sand. She had heard that the eggs could hear you if
you spoke to them but she had never heard of any dragon confirming
this fact. Regardless, she tried it. Delria moved her face closer to
the egg and whispered, "Hello in there, little
dragon. I don't know you and you don't me but I just thought you
should know that we're all
very anxious to meet you. So, when ever you want to come out, know that
you'll be loved and someone will be waiting for you. Maybe even me."
Catrien watched her friend and couldn't help but think she was more
natural then she was at this. Maybe that was it, maybe she wasn't
meant to be a rider. She glanced up at the beautiful gold, over to
the two riders sitting together and then to her friend once more and
stifled her own disappointment in herself.
Delria looked up just in time to catch a glimpse of Catrien's downtrodden
expression. Maybe it was time to leave. **Nah, just one more egg.** She said
to herself. The last one she touched was on the fringe closest to it's golden
mother. This time Delria thought better of speaking to it for fear of Onnyth
catching a few words. She didn't want the dragon to think she was a fool.
After a few strokes and pats, Delria carefully stood and strode over to
where the other Candidate was crouched. "About done? I don't think we
have time for
all of them." She said softly.
"Yeah," Catrien muttered, giving the one little egg she was beside a
soft pat before holding out her hand for Delria to help her up.
After getting Catrien to her feet, they met back up with G'wen and Teseada.
"Thank you again, Teseada. This really was an amazing opportunity. I hope
it did some good. Can you pass along our gratitude to Onnyth? She was very
kind letting us touch her eggs like that."
"She understands," Teseada said after a moment. "And she thanks you for
being gentle."
Catrien rolled her eyes, depressed. It was just like her to feck up
yet again. Her mother was going to be so annoyed with her when she
didn't Impress in a few sevendays. "You ready to go?" she asked
G'wen, holding out her hand, just needing comfort from one of her
oldest friends. She wasn't trying to be rude, she just needed a
cuddle from him and maybe some sweets.
As if reading her mind, he smiled and took her hand. His palm was
calloused under her's, giving her yet another reason to be depressed.
He--and S'vin--were now dragonriders. Of all their friends she was
the last one left. Even fat little Garrent had Impressed. She gave
him a look that said 'I need a hug.'
"You wanna come up to my weyr? T'bel gave me a funny book
on..y'know..." He rolled his eyes at the girls. "Heck, you all wanna
come up? We can get sweets and some klah and have a girl's night
in..."
Delria nodded. "That sounds nice and cheery. Anything to beat this snow.
Shells, will it ever stop?" She groaned and added, "Besides that book
sounds interesting. I don't even want to imagine what sort of things are
in there."
"Yeah you do," he teased her.
