Making Your Own Luck

Characters: Delria, Catrien
Description: Delria and Catrien hatch a plan----------
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 8 of Turn 6

"Ugh, am I glad that's over. Looks like we have a bit of a breather,
Cat. Any suggestions?" Delria asked her friend as she stored her notes
in a carisak which she then slung over her shoulder. The had just been
dismissed from their morning classes and Delria couldn't be happier.
She preferred chores and learning on the job rather than sitting
through lecture after lecture.

The small girl shook her head. Truth be told, if someone asked her
what the lecture was all about, she wouldn't have been able to recall
a single word, so lost in her daydreams was she. After turns and
turns of Standing there was only so much knowledge about dragons you
could cram into your head. And Catrien had reached her limit.

"Any suggestions? Forget about it. If we_do_Impress we'll get all
the important information in that first month anyhoo. I mean, bloody
G'wen didn't hardly take_any_of these classes--he kept just skipping
out on them--and look at him now." She tapped her friend's bag.
"Don't worry if you miss some info..it's not all that important
anyways."

"Having already taken classes once before this, I'm not. Seems more
like a 'take things as they come' type situation as it is. Besides
we'll have loads of help from the weyrlingstaff I'm sure." Delria
only partially believed what she was saying. The classes from her last
hatching were still firmly anchored in her mind. At the time she had
more than interested in learning all that the Weyr had to offer. That
was until she started making friends and then became hopelessly distracted.
"I don't know about you but I'm not walking off those Sands without a
hatchling at my side. No excuses this time," she continued.

The smaller girl snorted at that. "Good luck. I'm starting to think
there isn't a green out there for me, y'know? I mean, I've been doing
this for five turns now." at that she sighed, knowing she sounded
petty. "I don't know, maybe I need to butter up to Onnyth or
something, make her make one of her offspring Impress to me!"

Delria laughed at this. "That would be a sight. I can only imagine the
things you would have to do to please a queen dragon. But hey, if it works."

She did feel sorry a bit for her friend's unfortunate history. Standing again
and again and again wasn't something she could see herself doing. She would
just go about her business and live life a different way. She supposed that
wasn't an option for some. "I'm sure she'll find you this time, Catrien. You've
probably heard that about a million times but, you know me, happy endings for
everybody. Look at all the weyrlings we know who didn't expect to Impress."

"Well, G'wen is good friend's with Teseada, maybe if we agree to wash
Neath for the next two sevendays we can get him to ask her if we can
have a sneak peek of the eggs or something." She was game to try
anything at this point.

She shrugged, "It's worth a shot. Can't hurt. What's a little extra work?
Do you think it helps? I mean getting time with the eggs before the hatching?"

"Yeah, if it's the two of us, it won't take all_that_long. As long as
Neath doesn't decide to eat one of us or something." Catrien giggled,
thinking of the over-proud green. Another thought struck her mind.
"Y'know_maybe_if we play our cards right, we can befriend Teseada. Now
that might give us an edge, eh?"

"It just might though ultimately it's the little ones in the eggs that
we're trying to impress, no pun intended," Delira replied rolling her
eyes at her choice of words. "It wouldn't take long at all so we wouldn't
stress the queen out too much. I'd be more worried about her eating us
than Neath."

"Oh, Onnyth's one of the more laid backed Queens. And Teseada seems
really nice. I've not seen her around too many friends, either."
Catrien frowned a bit as she thought about the young gold rider. Come
to think of it, she hardly ever saw her with anyone other than G'wen
and some young blueriders. And never with a bronze rider or anyone
that looked like a potential weyrmate. Looking back to Delria, she
said, "y'know, I never have thought about how lonely it must be, being
a young gold rider. I've never seen Teseada with a girlfriend about
her."

Delria considered this for a moment. She had only seen the goldrider once
or twice and they had certainly never been introduced. Still though, as the
Weyr went, words travelled fast and she never heard anything about Teseada's
social circle which she took to mine Catrien was right and she didn't really
have one to speak of.

"Well, in that case, maybe we can be of use to her. Sounds like a
win-win situation
to me. Maybe on our restday we should make a trip over to see her,
bring G'wen along
to make the introductions."

"Yeah, we could. Maybe work S'vin over a bit to butter G'wen up for
us. He can be a bit obstinate if he thinks you're trying to use him
for something." She had watched the otherwise timid boy run off more
than a few admirers verbally in her day. He thought he was
unattractive, she knew he was just a tad sharp for a lot of boys
around here.

Delria smiled at the thought. S'vin could be most convincing when he
wanted to be, especially with G'wen. "Wouldn't want him to suspect anything.
We'll have to be careful. S'vin will take some convincing, he'll probably
want something in return. We can figure that out later though."

"That's easy enough! We'll just get that cute N'den drunk--or maybe
J'klar--and throw them in his path." Catrien slapped her hands
together like she was dusting them off. "Job done!" She loved her
childhood friend like her brother but, let's face it, S'vin was a
simple creature to understand.

"There you have it! What do you say we get started this evening after
chores? No reason to wait around. Those eggs aren't getting any softer."
Delria loved their idea. It was a new and creative task that would take
away from some of the dullness of everyday life as a Candidate.

"Sounds like a plan!"------------
