K'deren

The brownrider was sorting the hides he'd been given as he prepared to fold
them away in his belt pouch before heading home. He didn't notice the one
he'd dropped as he began to head back to the outside.

"Sir, you dropped something!" Yanley called after him. Thistle clung to her
shoulder.

"I," he turned. "Why thank you," The brownrider knelt to pick up the hide.
As he got back to his feet he cast his eyes over her, noting her features
and her knots, indicating she was part of the Lord's family. "Ma'am, Thank
you again."

"No problems. What bring Dolphin cove's wingsecond to Amber hills hold?
You're far from home," she replied and asked curiously. She could read knots
too. Thistle came curious and flew off, trying to get the hide to her claws.

"Hidework," he began. "There was some sort of mix up and we ended up with
some we shouldn't. So I came to sort it out."

"I see," Yanley said and noticed what her firelizard was doing, "Watch out
or your hidework will get chewed on. Thi, naughty girl!" she gently pulled
the firelizard off.

"She's a cute little one," K'deren chose his words carefully, some saw them
as pests."

"Cute yes, but her behavior leaves a lot to hope for. She's such a
mischievous little thing," Yanley said and placed Thistle so she could wrap
herself around her arm.

"Have you two been together long?"

"Twelve turns. I have another one too, but he's off somewhere on his own,"
Yanley replied.

"So he's more independent then?" asked K'deren.

"Yes, he is," Yanley replied with a warm smile.

"Like hios much bigger cousins then." K'deren replied, as he noticed her
smile. "Would you like to meet my Donneth? It'll give him something to
aspire to."

"I would love to," Yanley replied.

"Then if you'd care to accompany me outside," K'deren offered his arm.

"Thank you, sir," she said and placed her hand on his arm with a graceful
movements. He seemed nice one like all the dragonriders she had met.

"I'm K'deren," he said as they walked. "I don't think I introduced myself
properly."

"Pleased to meet you, K'deren. I'm Yanley, and this is Thistle or Thi for
short," she introduced herself and touched the green's tiny head lovingly.
Her firelizards were her babies since nature had not given her children of
her own.

"She's a lovely shade of green."

The flit must have know she was being complimented, for she obviously
preened and fanned her wings.
"You just made a friend," Yanley laughed.

"It looks like it," he said. "And you, have you made a friend too?"

For a moment, she hesitated. A lady didn't hang around with the
dragonriders, it wasn't proper. But then she remember, she was no long Lady
or married woman. She was free to do as she wished, independent. She wasn't
yet used to it. "Of course I have," she said with a lightheaded tone.

"And I think Donneth will also," said the brownrider as they emerged
outside. The brown dragon was sunning himself and turned to take in the
admiring gaze of his rider.

"He's a handsome fellow," Yanley said with a nodded when her gaze fell on
the brown. Thistle got curious and flew off to inspect the dragon.

"And good with those little ones, he doesn't mind them unlike some."

Donneth crooned a greeting to the fire lizard, waiting to see if he got a
response.

Thi made a trilling noise and obviously called her brother, for brown
firelizard appeared too, and joined her flying circles around the brown's
head.

The brown dragon was content to watch them for a moment as was his rider.
"They make a pretty pair," K'deren said.

}:They do,:{ Donneth told him. }:And you could with her, she is nice looking
for your kind.:{

That remark startled K'deren a little, but he kept his face straight.
Donneth rarely commented on things like that. He stole another glance,
confirming what Donneth had told him. Yanley was attractive. Not normally
the type of woman he would go for, but there was something about the little
he knew of her that intrigued him.

"They do. He was supposed to be my husband's firelizard. But he was late and
Bram was so hungry, and tried to steal the meat from Thi. So I had to feed
him too and when my husband finally arrived, it was too late. Both flits
answered only to me."

"Your husband," asked K'deren. "Is he here?" A husband might not be too
happy about a dragonrider talking to his wife.

"No. We just got...divorced," Yanley replied. It was still a sore spot and
it could heard from her voice.

"I'm sorry to hear that."

Yanley didn't feel like talking about it and just nodded briefly to
awknoledge she had heard his words.

"I do understand a little, my weyrmate, she was killed in fall a few turns
ago."

"I'm sorry to hear that," she said with a soft voice.

"She was a good woman, the best. I can only hope our daughter grows up just
like her."

"At least you do have her daughter," Yanley said and there it was again,
that bitter stab. Everyone has a child, except her.

K'deren gave her a smile, "She's too young to remember her mother, and I
wish I knew how that will affect her later on."

"I lost my mother when I was eight, and I turned out all right. She has
fostermother, right? That helps," Yanley replied.

"I think so." K'deren turned to his dragon. "I believe we should go now, but
it has been more than a pleasure to meet you."

"Likewise, K'deren. I hope will meet again someday," Yanley replied.

"I'm sure we will."
