Wirnan

Wirnan

Wirnan had impressed her, that much Kaya had to admit. There was a lot
he could have done to her. He could have hit her. He could have taken
her by force. She had even given him permission to do so! But he
hadn't. He had scared her, that was for certain! And for a while she
thought she might have turned him into what she had been trying to
avoid - but instead he had apologised. And he had taken her in his
arms, yes, but he hadn't forced her to do anything. He'd given her a
kiss, but it had been gentle, tender. An apologetic kiss. And then he
had left her alone, unwilling to hurt her, even in his anger. That
tenderness in the aftermath of his anger had left more of a mark than
any beating she'd ever had.

She felt guilty. The guilt had come and gone but now it was stronger
than ever. He'd been good to her, despite their arguing. He'd been
kind whereas other men would have pressed their advantage, taken their
anger out on her. And now she felt as if she should do something. She
had already decided to do her tasks like a wife should. Laundry.
Cleaning. But...

Her thoughts went back to the chat they had early on. A truce. It had
been broken and shattered, but perhaps they could pick up the pieces and
solder it back together. Perhaps they could mend it. Perhaps she
could help to spearhead it. So when she awoke early, Kaya did just
that. She crept out of the bedroom and slipped out without waking
him. The kitchens were, of course, already alight and she had procured
food without trouble. It was covered and she carried it back to their
rooms. Wirnan was still asleep, scrunched up on the couch. Kaya
carried the tray to their small table. Then she moved over to Wirnan's
side and gingerly touched his shoulder. "Wirnan..."

He startled awake, nearly knocking into her as he sat up quickly. His
initial instinct was that something was wrong and he'd been awakened to
see to the matter. When his eyes fell on Kaya, and took in that
everything was okay, he reached his hand up to rub the sleep from his
face.

"Everything okay?" He asked, surprised to find her looking down at him.
He knew things hadn't gone well these past few days, but he'd hoped
he'd made her realize how much he regretted what he'd done. His hair
was a bit mussed and he moved to stretch the kinks out of his back from
having slept on the too small couch.

Kaya had jerked back when Wirnan began to fling about, but the sudden
stab of fear faded when she realised it was merely because he was not
fully awake rather than out of anger at her. ''No.'' Her soft voice
assured him. ''It's just...breakfast...'

"Oh," he replied, looking up at her. Had he overslept? No, he didn't
think so. Perhaps she'd just risen early. "Did you say breakfast?" He
asked, shaking off the last of his sleep. He breathed in and smelled
the sweet scents of fresh food waiting for him. His stomach rumbled,
letting him know he had not eaten nearly enough the past few days.

"Eggs. Sausage. Sweetrolls." Kaya's voice remained soft as she listed
out the items she had procured. The drudge had brought them recently
enough that steam curled into the air. "I...thought...we could
eat...in here."

He gave a half-smile in her direction, reaching out to catch her hand.
"That was very nice of you," he said softly, letting go of her quickly
so as not to distress her. He wanted things to be different between
them, but he feared he had damaged things far too much. Yet, why had
she brought breakfast to them? Was she saying she forgave him? He
didn't dare hope.

Kaya tensed, but Wirnan's hold on her was not only gentle, but brief.
She nodded and moved back to the table, then slowly lowered herself in
one of the chairs. She folded her hands in her lap, waiting til Wirnan
managed to join her as well.

He rose, moving over to the table and taking his seat. He didn't really
know what to say.

Kaya's eyes darted up. They settled upon Wirnan as he sat across form
her, then drifted back down to the tray. she reached forward, pulling
the top off of one of the plates and then resting it in front of him
before doing the same for hers and taking up her fork. "Did
you...sleep well?" She asked almost hesitantly.

He accepted the plate with a "thank you," before picking up his own
fork to set into his breakfast. He looked up at her question. "It was
fine," he replied, knowing he would likely be spending many more nights
on that uncomfortably short couch. "And you? Did you sleep well?"

"Fine." Kaya echoed nodding. She lightly stabbed at her food, but
didn't bring any to her mouth. She shifted a bit, the awkwardness
stretching out. The tension hadn't ever fully dissipated though it was
certainly better than it was. She had forgiven him, but she still had
the sense that she needed to tread carefully, to keep him from getting
angry and she honestly wasn't sure what to say.
