Description: Things seemed to have degraded between Kaya and Wirnan.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 2, day 6 of Turn 6
Wirnan was exhausted. He'd had more hidework than usual
today and more visitors coming to see him about their needs. All he
wanted was to sit back, relax and enjoy a pleasant evening in his own
quarters. Of course that meant Kaya. Things had been going well for
awhile, but the past few mornings she'd been less than enthusiastic and
Wirnan was actually getting concerned. He couldn't fathom what could be
causing the change or if he was just imagining it.
Closing the door behind him, he turned and greeted her. "Good evening,
Kaya. How was your day?"
Kaya started to smile. Started to greet him and felt that warmth
attempting to creep into her voice. No. She couldn't. She was
letting herself get too comfortable, to close. It wasn't right. It
wasn't what she was supposed to be doing. So she checked herself,
schooled her expression before it revealed too much, made him think too
much of things. She nodded politely, straightening. "Wirnan, good
evening." Her eyes flicked over him briefly, then she turned back to
the needlework she had been working on when he entered.
He wanted to sigh or shout or do something when she gave him such a cold
reaction. Things had been doing well, but now something _was_ clearly
wrong. It wasn't just his imagination. Taking a glass of klah from the
sideboard, he moved and sat in the seat opposite her. "Is something
bothering you?" He asked.
"Hm?" Kaya looked up again, eyes flicking upward, but the gaze rested
upon him only briefly, distracted by the work of her hands. "No.
Nothing's wrong." Except everything was wrong. And it had all started
with his death. If only..
He gripped the glass a bit tighter at her obvious attempts to hide what
was bothering her. Shardit, but he had to know. "I can tell you don't
mean that. Things between us seemed to be going better, but now, all of
a sudden you act like you hardly know me. _Something_ is clearly wrong."
Everything was wrong. Things shouldn't have been this way. Kaya's
mouth twisted but she only ducked her head further, trying to
concentrate on the embroidery, though it was difficult. The dreams had
come back and they had only served to remind her of what she had lost.
What she had wanted. What had been taken away from her. And the guilt
had come. She was married, but not to the man she had truly promised
herself to, had promised that she would never be with another. She was
going to keep that promise. Things had been going better, yes, but
that was part of the problem. She couldn't let things get better. She
couldn't start caring about this man. It wasn't right. "It's nothing."
"Shards," he mumbled, "you're not being honest with me. I'd thought
we'd put all the lies and deceit behind us. I mean, after the trickery
you'd played to cause this situation in the first place. Are we back to
that again? You hiding things from me, and here, I'd thought we were
actually making a go of this husband and wife thing. Have I been
wrong?" He wasn't sure why her silence upset him so, but it did.
Perhaps it was the fact that he had _enjoyed_ having someone to confide
in, even in small ways, and now it seemed like she was pulling that
away from him. Was she playing some kind of game that he couldn't
understand? Sometimes it felt that way.
Kaya lowered her needlework, settling it in her lap. She looked up,
but not at Wirnan. rather, she stared at the fire. "There are some
things that are private." She said after a long few moments. She
swallowed, then lifted that needlework and began to guide the thread
along once more.
He grumbled under his breath, "Fine. If that's the way you want it.
Keep to yourself. I don't need your troubles anyway." He had enough of
his own troubles, with her being nearly at the top of that list.
Decided he honestly, didn't want to be anywhere near her at the moment,
Wirnan rose, grabbed his things and left, wanting to be anywhere but
there.
